The Hillsboro didn’t waste a lot of time on Friday evening to score runs in their South Central Ohio League game at Shaffer Park against the visiting East Clinton Astros.

In a game that took under two hours to complete, the Indians not only defeated the Astros, 10-0 in SCOL play, but with that win, the Tribe gained their third victory of the week, moving them to a 4-3 record in the league.

Hillsboro scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead, following HHS pitcher Jesse Walker shutting down the Astros in order in the first inning.

From there, the Indians added six more runs to their total, including taking a 7-0 advantage after five innings. HHS closed out the game with a three-run sixth to seal the run-rule shutout.

At the mound, Walker tossed a four-hit shutout, where in six innings (25 batters faced) the senior allowed just two walks and struck out six. He hit one batter and had a total of 82 pitches on the night.

“Jesse came out and threw strikes and did what we asked him to do,” HHS head coach Tim Hunt said. “He pitched great. Our pitchers are throwing strikes, our defense is starting to work, starting to make every play, and we are happy with how things are going right now.”

The Indians at the plate had a total of 16 hits, with three going for extra bases (all doubles), two walks and nine RBIs.

Both Brian Smith and Mason Stanley each had three hits, where Stanley, the lead-off batter, was 3-for-4 with a double and one run. Smith finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run.

Hunter Chain went 2-for-3 (one double) with two RBIs and one run, while teammate Ryan Hagan was 2-for-4 with three runs, and Walker was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Having one hit each for the Indians were Jacob DeAtley (one run), Wyatt Condo (two runs, one RBI), Cayse Cameron (two walks, one RBI, one run) and D.J. Brown.

“The kids have a positive attitude, and we are really enjoying coming to the ball park right now,” Hunt said. “We are starting to find our groove right now.”

This week, the Indians defeated the McClain Tigers, Washington Blue Lions and the Astros by a combined score of 34-5 with two consecutive shutouts to end the week, as they defeated the Blue Lions, 7-0 on Wednesday. On Tuesday, HHS won over their Highland County rival McClain, 17-5 at Mitchell Park in Greenfield.

The Indians have a big week ahead of them, with a doubleheader against Little Miami on Saturday, then on Monday and Tuesday, it is back to SCOL play with a game against the Wilmington Hurricane (Monday) and Clinton-Massie on Tuesday.

“We have a big doubleheader Saturday, and we just want to stay focused,” Hunt said. “We had a big week, though. Having the 7-0 win over Washington, that was big as they are a quality team.

“We are right in the thick of things in the league, just like last year, but we have to finish strong in the second half of the league. This is going to be a big week, with Wilmington and Clinton-Massie to start the week.”
