Rivalries were on the back burner as the Hillsboro Indians and Wilmington Hurricane baseball teams raised $1,000 for the Little Hearts Big Smiles Foundation during a recent fundraising effort between the two programs.
The Indians and Hurricane programs were unable to compete on the field due to schedule changes because of weather postponements, but they did gather on the same field in Wilmington Sunday afternoon to present their fundraising efforts to the Little Hearts Big Smiles Foundation.

Hillsboro and Wilmington sold T-shirts and wristbands and accepted donations for their fundraising cause.
“I'm really proud of my guys and how they and their families came together to help raise money for a local cause,” Hillsboro baseball head coach Matt Garman said. “This foundation does excellent work, and both of our coaching staffs couldn't be happier to help any way we can. Unfortunately, we were unable to play the game, but baseball was of secondary importance when it comes to something like this.
“I would like to thank my coaching staff, Ben Miller especially; the Hillsboro cheerleaders (special shoutout to Taryn Magulac); my team; anyone who supported this cause by buying a shirt or wristband; and Wilmington's players and coaching staff for all of their work. Most importantly, I want to say thanks to the men and women at the Little Hearts Big Smiles Foundation for all the amazing work they do.”
The Little Hearts Big Smiles Foundation supports families that triumph over autism and other disabilities.
On their website, the Little Hearts Big Smiles Foundation states: “Little Hearts Big Smiles was created in 2006 as a supportive outlet for families raising special needs children. We felt it was important to establish a group of families who could come and learn from one another, help one another cope and also raise awareness. We service the entire family by providing educational opportunities for parents and planning fun activities for kids. In 2008, we partnered with the Clinton County Foundation to become a not-for-profit.”
