Falling in three sets to the Logan Elm Lady Braves on Monday, the Hillsboro Lady Indians saw their season come to an end with a three-set loss on their home court in a Division II SE District sectional semifinal match.

In the three straight sets, the Lady Indians lost by scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-22, finishing their season with a 4-19 overall record as they were the No. 8 seed and Logan Elm (3-20) was the No. 9 seed.

“The girls have had a tough season, and we have struggled,” HHS head coach Nichole Dickey said. “We were hoping tonight that we’d rally the troops, and we wanted to get a win for the seniors here, but that’s not how it happened.

“We struggled a lot on serve-receive, and that made a difference in this game.”

The first set of the sectional match saw Logan Elm jump out to a 7-2 lead with two ties at 1-1 and 2-2. The lead eventually went to a 9-3 advantage for the visitors, forcing the Lady Indians to call a timeout.

Following the timeout, Logan Elm increased their lead to 17-3, but HHS came back with three straight points, including a serve from Gracie Dean for the sixth straight point. HHS eventually got to their 15th point with hits by Dean, but they lost the first set at 25-15.

The second set was more of the same with Hillsboro losing 25-14. The first point for HHS came from Paige Loudin, and later their second point in the set was scored by Hope Middleton. Later in the set, it was Hillsboro’s Loudin scoring a point for an 11-6 deficit to Logan Elm. Loudin finished the game with six kills.

The set continued to go in favor of the Lady Braves, as Hillsboro’s 10th point came from Abby Brown, but HHS still trailed by six points. The second set came to a close a few minutes later with Logan Elm scoring the final two points for the 11-point win. Brown finished the game with three kills.

Hillsboro played closest in the third set with the Last Indians scoring the first point of the set with a point by Brown. The score was later tied at 1-1 and 2-2, and HHS eventually built a 6-2 advantage with points from Emma Birkhimer and two aces by Middleton forcing Logan Elm to call a timeout.

Later, the score was tied at 9-9, then the Lady Braves gained the lead at 10-9 and didn’t trail for the rest of the third and final set. HHS eventually made it a 13-11 deficit, but Logan Elm made it a 21-15 lead with HHS calling a timeout.

HHS came back for a 22-18 deficit as the Lady Braves called for a break in the action, but HHS eventually trailed at 24-20 to score points by Brown on consecutive plays at the net to get HHS within two points of LEHS at 24-22.

Logan Elm scored the set three and match point with a play at the end for the win over HHS.

Seniors for the Lady Indians are Katie Condo, Loudin and Brown. Condo totaled 12 assists in the win.

“All three seniors all played through middle school and high school together, and they became varsity their sophomore year,” Dickey said. “All three played on varsity for three years, and we just wish the best for them in whatever they decide to do in the future.”
