The Miami Trace Lady Panthers are now 2-0 against volleyball teams from Highland County this week. On Tuesday, they defeated the McClain Lady Tigers, and two days later they won in three straight sets against the Hillsboro Lady Indians on Thursday night.
In their loss Thursday, the Lady Indians fell by scores by 25-8, 25-16 and 25-16, moving the Lady Indians to 2-11 overall this season and 0-3 in the Frontier Athletic Conference. Miami Trace jumps to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the FAC.
“Miami Trace had some really nice serving, and they attacked the ball well,” Hillsboro coach Nichole Dickey said. “Unfortunately, we were unable to dig up their hits, and we struggled with serve-receive a lot this evening.
“We just couldn’t get on a roll. We played well on Monday night against Madison-Plains as we went five with them, but we’ve struggled tonight and Tuesday night also.”

The first set of the game was all Miami Trace as they jumped to a 3-0 lead early on and later led by a 6-1 score with points scored by Olivia Fliehman and Kate Leach.
Later, MTHS held an 8-3 advantage following a point off a serve from Laura Robinson. She continued to serve away against Hillsboro, as that lead eventually turned into a 12-3 advantage as her serves were unable to be returned by the host Hillsboro squad.
Miami Trace’s lead went to 19-6 after a point from Piper Grooms and aces by Fliehman. That lead eventually went to 21-6 when Fliehman tallied another point, followed by Hillsboro gaining a point from Sinai Roberts.
The first set eventually ended with a serve by Chloe Scott and a point scored off a spike at the net from Tapanga Sanderson as MTHS won the set at 25-8.
In the second set, Hillsboro played closer to the Lady Panthers and at one point tied the score at 11-11, then held the lead after that for a few minutes. Eventually, Miami Trace continued from where they left off in set one as they built a 21-14 lead and later led at 24-16. MT ended the second set with a play at the net by Saylor Moore to win at 25-16.
“Miami Trace is doing very well this season,” Dickey said. “We did have the lead, but we just have to learn how to hold onto the lead when we get it.”
In the third set, Hillsboro tied the score at 3-3 following a point at the net and later took the lead. That lead eventually went to a tied score at 5-5, and an ace from Hope Middleton then tied the score at 7-7.
The score was tied one last time at 9-9, but from there MT took over with help from Anna Williams, Sidney Howard and Fliehman for a 24-15 lead and eventually the 25-16 set three and match win.
For HHS, Paige Loudin led the Lady Indians in kills for the match, and Middleton had aces for the Lady Indians.
Next for Hillsboro is a tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 14 at HHS with a 9 a.m. start time. HHS will play matches one and three.
