During the weekend of June 8-10, a group of local kids aged 8-10 joined together for the first time to play in the 10U tournament held annually at Richard Shaffer Park.
The team had never played together and had not held a practice.
Coached by Luke Kiley, Michael Hamilton, Shawn Hottinger and Brian Fauber, the group took on teams from Southern Ohio. The first day of games showed the jitters and lack of practice. However, the Hillsboro Team, sponsored by Cornele Plumbing and Amatha Farrens State Farm Insurance, was able to battle their way to the championship game on Sunday.
On Sunday the game did not start off the way they had planned getting behind the “home” team 5-0 at the end of the first inning. Even though they were losing, the coaches and players stayed positive, and like they have done all weekend, they battled.
At the end of the second inning, the score was 5-4. Great defense and great pitching kept the game close until the top of the third, where the Hillsboro boys took the lead 7-5.
Hillsboro added some more runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 11-5. The opposing team, Flash, scored two in the bottom of the 4th to make it 11-7.
In the top of the fifth, Hillsboro added their final run to make the score 12-7. In the final bat of the game, the home team Flash battled to the very end, scoring four runs in bottom of the sixth and loading the bases.
With the score of 12-11, with bases loaded and two outs, Flash popped up to the first baseman in foul territory to end the game and give the win to a bunch of local kids playing together for the first time.
The team roster for Hillsboro included: Carson Hart, Brody Armintrout, Preston Fauber, Jack Cornele, Jake Kiley, Cooper Swope, Zander Hamilton, Zaydenn Scruggs, Brady Juillerat, Kamren Hottinger, Jeven Hochstuhl and Nash Grooms.
The team and coaches would like to thank Cornele Plumbing and Amatha Farrens State Farm Insurance for their sponsorship and 560 Graphics for getting uniforms together in such short notice.
The team is still looking for a few sponsors. If interested, please contact Luke Kiley at (937) 402-7348.
