Over the years in the South Central Ohio League, the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons and the Hillsboro Lady Indians have played in some very competitive matches with league titles on the line. This season, the Lady Indians are in contention for the very last league title, but Clinton-Massie made that goal a little tougher on Monday night.

At their own field at Hillsboro High School, the Lady Indians failed to add another win to their overall total in their makeup match with the Lady Falcons, falling by a 3-2 score. In the process, the Lady Indians fell to 7-1-1 in the league standings but are still in the running for the league title.

Both Wilmington and Chillicothe are also at the top of the SCOL standings as well, with WHS having a record of 7-1-2, while Chillicothe is 8-1-1 in the league.

Hillsboro and Chillicothe face each other on Tuesday at CHS, as HHS must win the match to still have an opportunity at the outright league title, as WHS and CHS still have to face each other one final time this season.

HHS also has a game with the McClain Lady Tigers on Thursday, and on Oct. 11 they have a makeup match with Miami Trace to complete the SCOL schedule.

“This was a disappointing loss,” HHS head coach Jeremy Ratcliff said. “We jumped out early on, and it’s Clinton-Massie. They’ve still got a lot of pride, and they’re a very well-coached team. Their girls played hard. I give them a lot of credit. I thought they battled, and they did enough to win the game.

“I think we’ve still got a shot to win the league outright. I think Wilmington’s got one loss and two ties, and I think right now we’re tied with Chillicothe with one loss and one tie, so we play them (Tuesday). It’s obviously a huge game. That will determine a lot at the end of the season as to who the league champ is. We’ve got to put this one behind us, lick our wounds, clear our heads and come out ready to play at Chillicothe.”

As for the loss on Monday night, the Lady Indians held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play in what was a physical match for both squads.

Hillsboro scored their first goal with 26:18 left on the first-half clock, as Morgan Holland made it a 1-0 score. That was followed around 10 minutes later at the 26:18 mark with a goal from Callan Myers for a 2-0 lead by the home team.

CM scored their first goal at the 14:34 mark, with the score staying when time in the first half expired at 2-1 in favor of HHS.

The second half became very interesting with the Lady Falcons tying the match at the 31:34 mark off a goal, then took the lead for good at the 17:16 mark of the second half off a penalty kick.

HHS had some more opportunities, but they didn’t completely pan out, as they had offensive pressure on CM with 5:29 on the clock, but the defense of the Lady Falcons fended off the challenge by the Lady Indians.

A goal by the Lady Indians was called off by the officials with 1:59 left in the match as the CM keeper dove for the ball on a save. While making the save, the Lady Indians were near the goal and kicked the ball away from the diving keeper, as the ball landed on top of the keeper, also with a player from HHS.

Once the goal was called off, the officials (who stopped the clock) ruled the CM keeper initially had complete possession of the ball on the save attempt, nullifying what would have been the game-tying goal.

HHS had one final chance of offensive pressure but were called offsides with 1:10 left in the match.

For the season series, the two teams each won the road match, as HHS earlier this season won at CM by a 2-0 score.
