WASHINGTON C.H. — A strong six-run start by the Hillsboro Lady Indians softball team on Wednesday against the Washington Lady Blue Lions wasn’t enough to hold back the host squad, as unearned runs proved to be a factor in their Frontier Athletic Conference season opener.

Hillsboro’s six-run lead was eventually erased due to the Lady Blue Lions eventually tallying four unearned runs throughout the game, leading to a Washington win over the Lady Indians by a 9-7 score.

The young Hillsboro team showed improvement in their FAC opener on Wednesday as they had four hits in the top of the first inning, and they too took advantage of miscues by the home team to lead by a 6-0 score.

HHS (0-5) opened the first inning with a single by Kenzie Dietrick (2-for-4, one run, one steal), followed by a base hit by Gracey Dearmon and the bases were loaded off a walk forced by Christine Page. Mallory Parsons batted in Dietrick for the first run of the game, and later Dearmon scored off an infield error that left Jo Myers at first base.

Next, Kelcie Thornburgh reached the bases on a fielder’s choice, and Abbie Pettyjohn (2-for-3, two runs, two RBI) doubled in Parsons and Myers for two RBI. Jordan Moberly also batted Thornburgh with a groundout to the shortstop, and Pettyjohn eventually scored on an error in the outfield that left Emma Birkhimer at first base for the six-run advantage.

HHS added their final run of the game in the third inning when Pettyjohn scored off a two-out double hit by Moberly.

For the game, the Lady Indians totaled nine hits. Having one hit each were Dearmon, Page, Parsons, Myers and Moberly.

The pitching loss was charged to Dearmon, who in six innings allowed nine runs (five earned) on three hits and seven walks. She finished the game with four strikeouts and two hit batters.

As for Washington, they rallied in their win with four runs in the second inning, three runs in the fourth and two final runs — breaking the 7-7 tied score — in the bottom of the sixth inning.
