In front of their usual packed house at Richards Memorial Field during the annual Fish Fry and Meet the Team night, the Hillsboro Indians hosted the Paint Valley Bearcats in each of their final football scrimmages of the preseason.
The scrimmage was played like a game, and for the first half, the Indians and Bearcats (of the Scioto Valley Conference) played each other with intensity like it was a Week 1 game at times, though both teams were also trying to correct mistakes that came mixed in with their big-time plays on the field as well Friday night.
For Hillsboro, their two touchdowns came following the first touchdown of the scrimmage, which was scored by the Paint Valley Bearcats when on a second down play Paint Valley running back Tygr Tesi rushed for a score with 10:18 left in the second quarter.
The Indians, of the South Central Ohio League (SCOL), later answered with their first touchdown of the scrimmage with a 17-yard carry to pay dirt by Mason Swayne, as the PAT tied the score at 7-7 with 2:56 left in the quarter.
After Hillsboro made good use of their timeouts in the final minutes of the second quarter, they regained possession of the ball, and with the PV Bearcats having a mix of their roster on the field late in the second, the Indians went down field with a 15-yard reception by Reece Bloomfield for a first down to the PV 28-yard line.
Next, the Indians reached the end zone for the second time with 8.4 left on the second-quarter clock when Sajoun Jones caught a 28-yard reception from quarterback Hunter Chain, as Jones beat one-on-one coverage for the trip to the end zone, giving the Tribe a 14-7 lead after two complete quarters were played.
In the second half, rosters varied as each team had players from all levels of the roster gain playing time in preparation of the season.
Other standout plays for the two teams included:
• On a first-and-10 play from their own 42-yard line, Hillsboro’s Josh Keets rushed for a 34-yard gain to the PV 24-yard line in the first quarter.
• Chain rolled out on a play, avoiding a potential tackle for a loss to pass the ball to Brian Smith for a 15-yard gain on the opening drive.
• The Bearcats eventually forced a fumble and recovered the football for a touchback in the end zone to keep HHS from scoring.
• Buster Trent of Paint Valley had a 25-yard rush to get the Bearcats in the red zone of the Indians. The Indians defense held strong and didn’t allow PV to score any points on the drive, including a fourth-and-three stop to force the turnover with 2:29 left in the first quarter.
• During the first half, Austen Blevins of PV recovered a fumble, and later he caught a pass of a 20-plus yard gain to the HHS 6-yard line that eventually set up their first-half touchdown.
• On the first HHS touchdown drive, Jones had a reception of around 45 yards with 5:53 left in the second quarter.
With the preseason all wrapped up, the Hillsboro Indians will hit the road for Week 1 of the 2016 regular season, as they will take on the Western Brown Broncos of the Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference (SBAAC) with a start time of 7 p.m.
The Bearcats of Paint Valley will also be on the road Week 1, traveling to Cincinnati to take on the Hughes Big Red at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game.
