On Saturday, Oct. 10, Hillsboro traveled to Unioto to participate in the Unioto Invitational.

Hillsboro’s middle school girls team started the meet off in dominant fashion. Finishing with 22 points, the team won its third straight meet. Coach Alan Grigsby spoke about his team’s hard work and the meet win.

“I was very honest with my girls this week about the challenge they faced. This was a two-section meet, so we weren’t just racing our race, we were racing teams from the first group,” Grigsby explained.

Once again, the team was led by seventh grader Taylor Thoroman, who finished in second place with a run of 13:33, a personal record. Edging out two other runners at the finish line, Kennedy Sexton ran a 14:47 and finished in fifth place.

Finishing ninth and 10th were Olivia Covault and Jailyn Williams who completed the course with times of 15:25 and 15:30. Autumn Creek finished in 14th place with a time of 15:41. The final Hillsboro runner to complete the course was Allison Hendrix, who ran a 28:24 and placed 33rd.

“We set pacing and time goals and we go out and keep breaking them. These girls work so hard. They are fun to coach,” Grigsby said. “We left with first place, and now it’s time to get healthy and ready for the FAC Meet.”

The middle school boys team was unable to match the girls win, but did place third with 89 points. Once again, Ryan Howland paced the Indians runners. Howland, who finished in fifth place, finishing the course with a 12:31. Like Thoroman, this was also Howland’s fastest time.

Behind Howland were Corbin Winkle, Chris Sowders, and Cooper Swope, who finished in 10th, 15th, and 17th places. Winkle crossed the line in 13:04, while Sowders and Swope ran a 13:46 and 13:51. Finishing in 57th place was Robbie Schneider with a time of 16:16.

“We have been battling ankle and knee injuries,” Grigsby said. “My goal was for them to complete but stay healthy. We went out this week and really worked on individual goals and times to set us up for our next meet. I thought we ran really hard and finished third, which I am very proud of.”

The high school Lady Indians ran the first high school race. Bree Bailey led the team with a ninth place finish and a course run of 22:25, the freshman’s fastest time of the year.

Following closely behind was sophomore Emily Letts. Letts, crossed the finish line in 12th place with a time of 22:49. Finishing in 26th place and 28th place were freshmen Brooklyn Lucarello (25:07) and Allison Browning (25:27).

Coach Olivia Fulton was extremely proud of her runners' performances.

“We are still battling different injuries. But the overall results show we are recovering and getting back to where the girls will be able to meet their potential,” she said. “Unioto was a great meet for the girls. We had many PR and the girls left confident with their finishes. I am happy with the results and how hard each of the girls pushed to meet goals they have set for themselves.”

The final race of the day saw the high school boys team finish in ninth place. The first Indian to cross the finish line was sophomore Garet Thompson. Thompson finished in 40th place with a time of 20:41.

“I couldn’t be happier for Garet,” Coach Rob Snavely said. “He has taken about five minutes off of his time since the beginning of the season and continues to get better.”

Owen Ryan, a senior, finished in 51st place with a 21:44 followed by freshman, Keahi Mhanna, who crossed the line in 22:14, good for 56th place. Another freshman, Jacob Schommer came in 68th place at 23:32.

Ethan Griffin, a sophomore, ran a 24:40, good for 80th place. The final two Indian runners, Mason Hostetler, a freshman, and John Rinehart, a sophomore, finished in 85th and 87th places with times of 25:08 and 26:15.

“When only one of your runners had ever competed in a high school meet at the start of the season, you wonder how things will go. It hasn’t been easy. We are taking our lumps, but getting better. It seems like every runner PRs at nearly every race and they show up at practice ready for more. I love our work ethic and attitude.”

All four teams will finish the regular season this Thursday at the FAC Meet.
