The OHSAA Division II State Track and Field Championships next weekend will be well represented by Hillsboro and McClain, with the two schools combining to send 10 athletes to the state event following their Top 4 performances at the Athens Regionals on Thursday and Saturday.

Saturday saw McClain junior Chayden Pitzer win a regional championship with her first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a championship time of 25.46, which is also a new school record. The time was faster than her prelim time earlier in the week at regionals, which clocked in at 25.75.

This postseason, Pitzer was the district runner-up in the 200m event with a time of 25.87. Even with the championship, the McClain junior wasn’t finished as she also qualified for state in the 100m hurdles with a fourth-place regional finish and is a member of the 4x200m relay team that also finished in fourth place.

In the 100m hurdles, Pitzer finished with a time of 15.32 for the aforementioned fourth-place finish. In the prelims, her time was 15.37. At districts, Pitzer was the champion in the 100m hurdles at 15.25.

As for the McClain 4x200m relay team of Maddy Stegbauer, Hunter Scott, Ashley Hardesty and Pitzer, they finished with a time of 1:46.23 at regionals for the fourth-place finish, breaking their own school record. This time was faster than their fifth-place time during the prelims at 1:47.17. The same 4x200m relay team was the district champion a week ago when they had a time of 1:47.47.

The Tigers boys team is also sending a racer to the state championships in senior Tristan Pitzer. The senior qualified for the 200m dash with a third-place time of 22.92. In the regional prelims, Pitzer was second with a time of 22.79. One week ago at districts, the senior 200m state qualifier Pitzer was second with a time of 22.81.

There is also seated racer Kaylee Hurley representing McClain at state in four events. The three-time defending state champion will be racing in the 100m, 200m and 400m races, along with competing in the shot put event. Times and distances earned earlier in the season qualified Hurley for her fourth trip back to the state tournament.

The Hillsboro Indians are sending four athletes in a total of three events with junior and last year’s Division II state runner-up Austin Goolsby returning to the pole vault event after winning the regional championship on Thursday. At regionals, Goolsby had a height of 15-00.00. At state one year ago, Goolsby vaulted to a height of 15-06.00.

Jeremy Hayton will also be in two events at state, with the senior qualifying as an individual for the high jump event. At regionals on Saturday, Hayton tied for second place as the regional runner-up with a height of 6-04.00. At districts last week, Hayton was the champion with the same 6-04.00 height.

Hayton and Goolsby will join teammates Austin Kimball and Luke Gallimore at state in the 4x100m relay race. The team of four placed fourth overall at the Athens regionals on Saturday with a time of 44.19. During the prelims, the four sprinters were fifth with a time of 44.32. At districts last weekend, they were second place with a time of 44.46.

The Division II State Track and Field Championships will take place this Friday and Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, located on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus.
