HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Indians and Jackson Ironmen battled for a Frontier Athletic Conference victory on Friday night, as both teams used stout pitching to keep the other off-balanced. Once the seven-inning game was complete, it was the visiting Ironmen who earned the conference victory, defeating Hillsboro by a 1-0 score.
The loss by the Indians move them to 11-3 overall (4-2 in the FAC) in 2021. As for Jackson, they are now 5-1 in the FAC and 12-2 overall.
Hillsboro was held hitless for the first four innings, but their bats came alive in the fifth as they gained all three of their hits for the game. After the lead-off batter recorded an out, Brayden Cochran hit a single to centerfield, followed by a base hit to left field by Zach Humphries.
Before the third hit of the inning (which was a single by Brayden Kisling to centerfield), Cochran was caught stealing third for the second out, and the third out came on a line drive as the inning ended with HHS recording three hits, but stranding two base runners.
Jackson had just two hits on the night, while committing no errors. On the other side of the diamond, the Indians committed two errors, both coming in the third inning, which led to the Ironmen’s only run of the game.
The go-ahead and eventual game-winning run happened as the Indians walked Isaac Kuhn to start the inning. Next was a sacrifice bunt from Ty Broermann to advance Kuhn to second base. From there, Drew Bragg hit a ground ball, but reached first base via error, scoring Kuhn for the only run of the game.
Also for the Indians, Coltin Hunter reached the bases, as he drew a walk.
Warner was charged with the loss on the mound. In six innings, he allowed one run (unearned) on two hits and three walks. He finished with four strikeouts and threw a total of 102 pitches.
Brad Miller pitched one inning of relief as he retired the side in the top of the seventh inning, throwing 14 pitches and allowing no hits, runs or walks.
Next for the Indians is a road game on Monday, April 26, as the Indians will face the Miami Trace Panthers at 5 p.m. at MTHS in FAC action.
