On Friday, Nov. 30, the Hillsboro Lady Indians varsity squad took time out of their season to become more than players. The Lady Indians, along with their coaches (Moberly, Gleadle and Hopkins), came to the Hillsboro Elementary gym to have a joint practice with Hillsboro’s youngest team, made up of second and third graders. The practice was a way for the all the players to come together and create a bond and a sense of family.

The varsity coaches instructed the youth and taught new drills, along with some of the younger squad’s favorites from summer camp, as each of the second- and third-graders on the elementary basketball team attended the summer camp during summer break. The coaches instructed the players on dribbling and passing drills, and in the end the varsity girls took small groups of the youth players and worked on shooting form. They ended the practice by playing games such as dribble tag, Pac-man, relay races and knockout.

The youth team is very thankful for the opportunity to see and work with such amazing athletes and dedicated coaches. To these younger girls, the varsity Lady Indians are like Steph Curry and LeBron James, as they look up to these girls and try to mimic their games. Some of the younger girls wear numbers to match their favorite player.

The excitement shown before and during the practice was amazing. Coach Moberly even stated his girls had a blast, and it’s good for them to have fun, too.

The varsity Lady Indians, who continue to grow as a team and individually, showed amazing support for the younger girls. The younger girls now have not just a player to watch, but a relationship of friendship and pride. The youth now can scream their names and watch the varsity games with more excitement and interest. The varsity Lady Indians are now more than just basketball players, but role models to some of the younger girls.

After the joint practice, both teams met in the elementary cafeteria for a “Feed the Teams,” sponsored by 24 Exchange, which was very generous in showing support to the varsity Lady Indians and the youth team by providing food to cap off an amazing experience. With such great community support, great coaching and dedicated players, the present and future of Hillsboro Lady Indians look strong.

Thanks to Coach Moberly, Coach Gleadle and Coach Hopkins for making this happen. Also, thanks to the varsity Lady Indians for their leadership and patience. Thanks to the youth parents for allowing their children to be part of such a great experience. Both teams offer a big thanks to 24 Exchange for the support as well.
