The season opener for the 2019 Hillsboro Lady Indians didn’t go how they had hoped on the scoreboard Saturday morning. Hillsboro scored two first-half goals, but were held scoreless in the second half, resulting in the visiting Eastern Brown Lady Warriors gaining the non-conference victory by a 5-2 score.
Hillsboro’s loss on their home field saw them and the Lady Warriors — of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference — play to a 2-2 tie in the first half following the first 40 minutes of the season. In that half, the Lady Indians were first to get the ball into the back of the net as junior Alexia Sheppard scored the first goal of the season at the 37:33 mark with a one-on-one situation for the 1-0 lead.
Eastern answered with a goal of their own at the 34-minute mark, with Bailey Dotson taking advantage of a defensive miscue by Hillsboro and tying the game at 1-1. Eastern continued to score goals, with their second goal coming from Rylee Leonard off a cross kick at the 21-minute mark for the 2-1 advantage.
