HILLSBORO — The Frontier Athletic Conference had a classic showdown on the basketball court on Wednesday with the host Hillsboro Lady Indians and the Jackson Ironladies battling into overtime, but in the end it was JHS who left Highland County with the win by a 54-50 score.

The win was the first of the season for the Ironladies, who are 1-6 overall, while the Lady Indians fell to 1-8 on the season. The game itself on Wednesday at Hillsboro High School saw a very competitive second half, and for that matter, the first half was a closely played contest as well.

Hillsboro led Jackson 6-4 at the end of the first quarter, and following a second quarter where JHS outscored the Lady Indians 13-12, Hillsboro led by a single point at 18-17 when halftime arrived.

Then came the next two frames of regulation, and not only did the intensity of the two teams pick up, but the pace of the game did as well, starting with Jackson sinking two baskets at the start of the third, including a 3-pointer by Raegan Hall with 6:09 left on the scoreboard, propelling the Ironladies into a 22-18 lead.

Hillsboro’s Jordan Moberly — who finished with four rebounds, four points and one assist — followed with a layup at the 5:53 mark of the quarter, followed by a jumper by Karleigh Hopkins, tying the score at 25 with 5:30 still left in the third. Jackson broke the tied score with a 3-pointer from Hall for a 25-22 score.

HHS cut the Jackson lead to two points wit a free throw by Karleigh Hopkins, then regained the lead with a three-point play by Mallory Parsons, who led the Lady Indians with 17 points for the game, including 13 points in the second half. Parsons also totaled nine rebounds for HHS.

Following the points by Parsons, and a timeout by the Ironladies, Josie Hopkins sank a basket at the hoop, but once again, JHS answered with a three-point play of their own from Bronwyn Nelson with 52.6 remaining in the third for a 28-28 tied score. JHS took the lead with 10 seconds left in the quarter with a basket by Lauren Elliott for the 30-28 advantage over Hillsboro headed into the fourth frame, while also winning the third at 13-10.

The most competitive frame of all was the fourth quarter, with the score being tied on five occasions, including the final time of the fourth at 47, which sent the game into overtime.

Before that score, the Ironladies built a three-point lead from a early fourth-quarter free-throw make by Taylor Evans. The three-point lead shifted to a single point following a put-back basket by Parsons, and later a basket by Karleigh Hopkins left the score tied at 32 with 6:50 still remaining in the fourth frame.

The score was eventually tied at 37 following a layup by Gracie Dean of Hillsboro and teammate Josie Hopkins making two free throws for the 37-37 score with 4:03 left in the fourth, finishing the game with five points, five rebounds and two steals.

Dean wrapped up the game with seven points, eight rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal.

Again, JHS regained the lead at the free-throw line with 3:42 on the clock, only to see Moberly grab an offensive rebound, spin and score two points in the paint, for a tied score of 39.

After two more free throws made by the visitors, the Lady Indians tied the score at 41 with points by Karleigh Hopkins, as she finished the game with 14 points, nine rebounds, seven steals, two assists and one block.

A 3-pointer from Jackson’s Lauren Elliott pushed the Ironladies back ahead at 46-43 with 1:10 remaining in regulation, only to see Parsons sink a jumper for the Lady Indians. Later, with 13.1 left on the scoreboard, it was Parsons again who pushed the Lady Indians ahead at 47-46.

Hillsboro fouled Jackson with 5.9 left in regulation, where Katelyn Webb made one of her two free-throw attempts, tying the game at 47 and forcing overtime.

JHS won the four-minute overtime period at 7-3, where HHS never forced a tie or held the lead. HHS did get to within a point of tying the score with a layup from Karleigh Hopkins with 19 seconds remaining, making it 51-50.

The Ironladies ended the game with three more free-throw conversions for the final 54-50 score.

The game was tied a total of 12 times with six lead changes. Also for the game, the Ironladies were 19-of-29 in free-throw shooting, while HHS was 10-of-20.

For the Lady Indians, Kayden Watson scored three points and added four rebounds and one assist. Sinai Roberts finished with one steal. Brynn Bledsoe totaled one rebound, two assists and two steals.

For Jackson, they were led in scoring by Evans with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Webb finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

Next for the Lady Indians is an FAC game on the road against Highland County rival McClain. In their game on Wednesday, the McClain Lady Tigers lost in non-conference action to Clinton-Massie, 51-41.
