The Lady Indians in the fourth had a 3-pointer by Dean, six points from Watson and four free-throw conversions by Josie Hopkins.
“It’s nice. I really feel like we’ve been close for a while, we just haven’t been able to finish it. We tried to throw it away again tonight,” Hillsboro head coach J.R. Moberly said. “I really thought it was a good moment for our kids to step back. I think they really handled the basketball late and did what they had to do to finish it, and I’m hoping that’ll be something we can grow on.
“We shot the ball well in the first half, and in the second half we shot it 32 percent. We did a better job from the free-throw line. We were 8-of-11. We came in and worked on that a little bit today. We’d make our free throws Saturday, maybe we’d get a win over at Greenfield. We were 6-of-17 from the line over there, so a much better effort from the free-throw line today.”
Dean led HHS with 17 points, including six two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and going 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. Next for the Lady Indians were Watson and Josie Hopkins with eight points each.
Scoring four points each for HHS were Karleigh Hopkins, Bledsoe and Moberly. Rounding out the scoring for HHS was Parsons with two points.
“I thought Josie Hopkins had a big game. She had eight points, nine rebounds and handled the basketball a lot for us,” Moberly said. “I thought Mallory Parsons came off the bench and gave us some good minutes. Kayden Watson stepped in and made some shots for us. She’s been struggling, but today she was able to throw a couple down and build her confidence a little bit.”
For the game, the Lady Indians totaled 18 two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and they were 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.
The Lady Indians totaled 52 rebounds (13 offensive), along with three blocked shots and 11 steals. Josie Hopkins led HHS with nine rebounds, while Dean collected six rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals.
“I thought we did a great job defensively for all but about eight minutes in the middle of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter, but their (Paint Valley’s) girls, credit to them, they stepped up and hit some big shots,” Moberly said.
The Lady Bearcats were led by Stanforth with 13 points.
“They work hard, and they really get after it,” Moberly said of his team. “They played real well Saturday, just right there at that end, right there in the stretch, we didn’t finish it. Today we found a way to finish it, and I’m thinking that’s big for us.”
Next for the Lady Indians is a home game on Saturday, Jan. 4 against the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons.
