The Hillsboro Lady Indians struggled to score points in the first three quarters, and though they saved their best for last in the final eight minutes, a rally to win was too late in their Frontier Athletic Conference opener on Monday night, falling to the Lady Cavaliers, 39-29.
Though HHS (0-1, 1-3) scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, they were held to only 13 points after three quarters combined, while Chillicothe held a 20-8 lead at halftime and 30-13 lead after three frames.
“We really struggled to put points on the board the past three games now. We scored 49 points in our opener, and we’ve just struggled since to make anything,” HHS head coach JR Moberly said. “Our girls really got after it defensively (in the fourth quarter), and we worried we weren’t going to be able to guard Shawnice (Smith) in the post, and on the first play they post us up.

“We were about guarding Zoe (Ford) on the drive, and she does a nice job. We thought maybe the 2-3 would help us out, and they did knock down a couple three pointers, but all in all it worked out well for us. We need that full-court pressure/man to generate some offense because we can’t get anything going without it. We have to generate some baskets.”
The game began with Chillicothe’s Shawnice Smith scoring the first two points of the game, while HHS answered with a layup by Brynn Bledsoe for the 2-2 score one minute into the game.
Bledsoe ended the game with a team-high 14 points as she finished with four two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and she was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Smith finished with 11 points for the Lady Cavs, as she made five two-point baskets and one free throw.
From there, a 3-pointer from Julia Hall broke the tied score for a 5-2 CHS lead, and as the quarter continued, both the Lady Indians and Lady Cavaliers struggled to score points.
It was at the 6:01 mark when Karleigh Hopkins sank a free throw, and the next point for either team didn’t come until the 2:35 mark of the first frame when Josie Hopkins scored a point off a free-throw conversion, bringing the Lady Indians to within one point of tying the game at 5-4. Josie Hopkins finished the game with 10 points, making two two-point field goals and six free throws on the night.
CHS answered with two points in the paint by Zoe Ford, and following a timeout by the Lady Indians, it was HHS scoring points off a basket Josie Hopkins with 1:02 on the clock, again making it a one-point deficit, as HHS trailed by a 7-6 score. Ford — who totaled 11 points for CHS — added two final points in the first frame for the visitors, pushing CHS ahead by a 9-6 score as the first quarter came to a close.
The second frame was the toughest of the game for the home team Lady Indians as Jordan Moberly was the first to score points off a layup at the 7:17 mark, and those would be the only points scored in the frame for HHS.
After HHS made it a 9-8 deficit, CHS scored the next 11 points with points off buckets by Makenzie Greene, Ford (a 3-pointer) and Hall (a 3-pointer), with the scoring being 20-8 once halftime arrived. Hall ended the game with six points, and Greene totaled six points.
In the first half, the Lady Indians had 10 turnovers, which helped lead to the 12-point scoring differential after two quarters.
HHS was outscored 10-5 in the third with points for the Lady Indians from Josie Hopkins (three free throws) and a layup by Bledsoe for the 30-13 score after three frames. HHS also outscored the Lady Cavaliers in the second half by a 21-19 score.
The final quarter was the most intense and best-scoring eight minutes for the host Hillsboro squad, though in the early stages of the frame Chillicothe had a bucket from Greene which resulted in an 18-point lead for CHS, a 32-14 score with 7:26 left in the fourth,
From there, HHS fought back with two free throws by Bledsoe, a layup by Karleigh Hopkins and two points by Bledsoe again for a 32-20 deficit and a 6-0 run by the Lady Indians with 6:15 left in the final quarter. That run turned into a 9-0 run following a 3-pointer from the corner of the court by Bledsoe for a 32-23 score, cutting the CHS lead down to nine points.
Chillicothe eventually answered with five consecutive points from Smith, but with 1:23 left on the clock, Bledsoe was there again for the Lady Indians, followed by a jumper from Josie Hopkins to bring HHS back to within 10 points.
With under 30 seconds to go in the game, Chillicothe’s Emma Fromm made two free throws, as did Hillsboro’s Josie Hopkins with 16.7 left in the final frame, for the final points scored in the FAC contest.
“Sinai Roberts came off the bench and played a super job defensively, to really pick up the tempo and force them into some turnovers that allowed us to get some transition stuff,” Moberly said. “We had some good contributions from our younger kids, and our older kids kept battling.
“They didn’t have a great night shooting, and we really count on them to score, but it will come. They are just playing tight right now, and we are going to work on that (Tuesday) in practice.”
Next for the Lady Indians is an away FAC game on Wednesday, Dec. 4 in Fayette County against the Washington Lady Blue Lions in Washington C.H.
