The Hillsboro Indians hosted their first home meet of the 2019-20 season on Thursday night, where they defeated the visiting Chillicothe Cavaliers in Frontier Athletic Conference action.

In the four matches held on Thursday, the Indians won two and the Cavaliers won two.

The first of Hillsboro’s two wins saw Xander Hardin win by pin fall over Samuel Park of Chillicothe at the 1:35 mark of the first period of their 220-pound match. Before the pin, Hardin had a 2-1 lead in the match, as he had a takedown.

“Xander went out at 220 for us, and he’s usually 195, so he went up a weight class and got the win,” HHS head coach Greg Rhoads said. “It was good for him to get a win in front of his home crowd because he missed the back half of the season last year.”

Michael Hicks of Chillicothe won the second match in the 120-pound match, defeating Kaden Boris by a first-period pin fall.

“Kaden Boris wrestled a tough match,” Rhoads said. “He’s a kid who has never wrestled before and is getting better with each match. He has some tendencies that are starting to come through.”

Hillsboro’s second win came with Isaac Lewis winning the 132-pound match over Trey Howard of CHS with a pin fall victory in the second period. Lewis led the match 10-4 after the first round with five takedowns. In the second period, he added two more points with another takedown before gaining the pin fall victory.

“Isaac just came back from injury, and he’s taken up from where he was last year,” Rhoads said. “He’s only wrestled two years, and he goes out there and does everything you ask of him.”

Ryan Mau of HHS lost to Caleb Lake in the 145-pound match by major decision.

“Ryan is a freshman for us, and he went down to 145, which was his first time at 145, so he had to adjust to the weight class and had a tough opponent in Lake,” Rhoads said. “He went out there and did what I asked him to do and fought a tough match.”

In the match, Chillicothe gained two wins via forfeit, while the Indians had four forfeit wins. Hillsboro’s forfeit wins came in the following weight classes: Cameron Roberts (160), Scott Eastes (170), Justin Conn (182) and Garrett Fannin (195).

The win by Hillsboro puts them at 1-1 in the FAC.

“We are at the point where we are playing a numbers game,” Rhoads said of the season. “We know what we have coming up, it is just making sure everyone we get everybody on the same page and bringing the kids along in the junior high program.

“The high school guys in particular are getting agitated with each other, which is good and what I want to see. We are where we need to be. We have a break coming up, so we have some time to iron some stuff out as we head into league.”

Next for Hillsboro is a FAC dual on Thursday, Jan. 16 at home vs. Jackson with a 6 p.m. start.
