It was a first for Hillsboro head coach Adam Schelling, as the Hillsboro Indians’ 6-4 win over the visiting Eastern Brown Warriors resulted in it being the first varsity coaching win for the new leader of the Hillsboro boys soccer team.
Schelling took over the reins of the Hillsboro team this offseason, and in their first time out for the 2019 season the Indians gave their new head coach his first varsity coaching win on his very first try.
The Indians didn’t hesitate as they scored three goals in each half, leading at the halftime break by a 3-1 score.
“We got up 3-1 at the half, and they (Eastern) got a nice goal at the end of the first half. At halftime, we asked the boys to put in a few more goals, and they did,” Schelling said. “I said ‘I’d like to see six,’ and they put up six.”
Hillsboro’s six goals were spaced out with five players kicking the ball past the keeper in the game played at Hillsboro High School. Hillsboro was led in scoring by Tytus Hester with two goals, while having one goal each were Ethan Snapp, Brock Haines, Hunter Hice and Ben Flora.
The goal scoring breakdown saw Snapp, Haines and Flora score goals in the first half, and the second-half goals were by Hester with two and Hice with one.
Assists for the Indians went to Snapp with two, while Haines, Landon Weber and Shane Sullivan each had one assist.
The Indians stood out not only offensively, but on the defensive side of the ball as well, as Coach Schelling spoke highly about his defenders following the season-opening win.
“Our defense … our four defenders, Nick Turner, Dylan Schurman, Shane Sullivan and Dylan Rigsby played amazing in the back. They played 80 minutes straight for me and didn’t come out of the game, and they were solid back there,” Schelling said. “We gave up four goals, but all along we had possession for most of the game, like 60-70 percent of the game, so I was very happy with the result.”
Even in the win and having six offensive goals, Hillsboro still has some improvements that need to be made, according to their head coach.
“Something we’ve been working on is shots on frame,” Schelling said. “We lost our striker from last year (due to graduation), and now we are trying to develop a new striker here. We probably have nine to 10 midfielders on the field at the same time, and we are working out different strikers here and there.
“That is the one thing we are working on as you can see, shots on frame. We passed very, very well, and we had a defensive midfielder score to goals. We have a defensive midfielder who scored to goals, and that means you’re playing high pressure and we are playing well.”
Again, this was the first varsity win for Schelling, as this was the first game of his career as a head coach.
“This is very special being the first win,” he said. “I was nervous all week, and after the two scrimmages I was still nervous, but our boys came through for me, so I’m very happy.
“I’m proud of the boys, but now we have to turn around and have a tough schedule coming up with three really hard games. They are going to be hard wins, and this was a must-win, and we got it under our belts. Now we have to get back to the practice field and get ready for the next three games.”
