DODSONVILLE — The Hillsboro Indians gained possibly their best win of the season thus far on Monday night by defeating the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs by a score of 2-0 at LCHS in their non-conference game.

The Indians (3-6-1) scored both of their goals in the first half, with the first goal coming with 30:08 left on the scoreboard off the foot of Titus Heiser for the 1-0 lead. Hillsboro’s second goal came in the final moments of the first half with Logan Weber scoring the goal with the assist by Landon Weber with 30.8 left in the half, pushing the Hillsboro lead to 2-0.

“We had two first-half goals, and we played a very, very good Lynchburg-Clay team. This game reminded me of our Wilmington game where we went up and they came back and beat us in the second half,” HHS head coach Adam Schelling said. “I told the guys at the half that the Wilmington game was haunting me.

“We don’t have much depth on the bench, so that is where we had to keep subbing in and getting everybody out, but these guys fought hard and they have played through a lot of adversity. We have a lot of L’s recently, and this is a very good win to get our season turned around.”

The second goal late in the first half changed the complexion of the game for Hillsboro.

“That goal was very important because I knew a one-goal lead probably wouldn’t last against Lynchburg-Clay, so I was telling our assistant coach that we had to get another goal," Schelling said. "We had two or three wide-open chances that could have gone in, but their goalie is excellent and he saved them.

“We scored those two goals without a true striker too, as he’s hurt right now. We had two defenders up at striker, and they played out of their minds. We played team soccer, and it was a great win.”

There were no goals in the second half, as the defenses of both teams fended off any chances of their opponent scoring.

Coach Schelling said he was pleased with the defensive play of his team.

“Our defense played well, and I said I had five MVPs of this game and they were my goalie Jason Lovlie, Shane Sullivan,
Dylan Schurman, Ethan Snapp and Landon Weber,” he said. “When we were up 2-0, I was expecting LC to put one in early in the second half because I know how good of a team they are … they are a very good team.

“Again, my defense played out of their minds today, and I’m so grateful. I’d never imagined we’d hold them to no goals. This is important for our morale because we’ve lost a lot of close ones, so this is a big, big win.”

For the Mustangs (6-3-1), they had five saves by Gavin Stroop and one save by Ian Waits.

Next for the Indians is a home match on Tuesday, Sept. 24 vs. the Washington Blue Lions in Frontier Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs will play again on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Peebles in a Southern Hills Athletic Conference contest.
