HILLSBORO – As well as the first quarter went for the Hillsboro Indians’ defense — as they held the Jackson Ironmen scoreless in 12 minutes of action — the rest of the game had the complete opposite feeling for the home team Indians at Richards Memorial Field.
The Indians (0-1, 3-3) struggled the rest of the way on both sides of the ball, as JHS built a halftime lead of 28-0 and eventually completed the shutout by a 42-0 score in Week 6 action on Friday night in the Frontier Athletic Conference opener.
Hillsboro’s first quarter saw them have a decent first drive to start the game, as the offense had a 35-yard completion from Chris Stout to Travis Ross. Later on the drive, Stout connected with Ethan Grooms for a 33-yard completion, putting the Indians in a first-and-goal situation from the 10-yard line.
Then came a sack by the Ironmen for a 9-yard loss, and eventually the Indians went for a 48-yard field goal as it was just a few yards short, but was on target.
On the ensuing drive, the Indians’ defense held Jackson to a fourth-and 12 from their own 28-yard line, and the Ironmen went with a fake out as they attempted to run for a first down out of punt formation but were stopped short for a turnover on downs.
The next offensive drive had a highlight of a 15-yard rush by Canaan Griffith, who originally looked to pass the football on a trick play, but with no receivers open, he opted to run with the football for a first down to the 18-yard line of Jackson. HHS ran the ball two plays later and had a turnover as the Ironmen recovered the ball with 3:33 left in the opening frame.
The Indians’ defense again stood strong by forcing the Ironmen to punt, but the Indians did the same thing five plays later. The lone positive-yardage play for the Indians on this drive before their punt was an 11-yard rush by Ross.
As the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie, from the time that frame ended and the second quarter began, a whole new Jackson team emerged from the break in play, and the rest was history for both teams.
The Ironmen (1-0, 4-2) scored their first touchdown with 9:02 left in the quarter, as Eli Broermann rushed for a 5-yard score. The PAT by Ethan Crabtree pushed JHS in the lead at 7-0.
HHS had no luck on the kickoff as they fumbled the football, and it was recovered by Crabtree of JHS with 8:52 left in the first half on the HHS 17-yard line. Four plays later, the Ironmen were standing in the end zone after a 75-yard pass and completion from Jacob Winters to Cade Wolford with 8:24 left in the first quarter. Again, the PAT went through the uprights for a 14-0 lead.
HHS tried their best to create some offensive momentum with a 17-yard run by Ross and a 6-yard gain by Griffith, but they were forced to punt.
On the first offensive play of the ensuing Jackson drive, the Ironmen returned to the end zone with a 77-yard touchdown reception, as a short throw by Winters went to Broermann in the middle of the field, and Broermann went toward the JHS sideline and raced his way for a touchdown with 5:50 on the second quarter clock. The PAT was good once again for a 21-0 Jackson advantage.
The final touchdown of the first half for the visitors was an 8-yard run by Wolford with 1:21 left in the first half. The converted PAT made the score 28-0, which stood at halftime.
Hillsboro’s defense to start the second half ended a drive by the Ironmen with a sack by Austin Barrett with 8:26 left in the third, but on the next drive JHS took back possession with an interception by Tristan Prater with 7:57 on the clock in the third frame.
Jackson’s fifth touchdown came off a touchdown reception by Jacob Wood with 6:24 on the clock, causing the running clock to start and stay for the rest of the game. The Ironmen added one final touchdown in the fourth quarter with 2:15 remaining in the game.
Next for Hillsboro is their homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 1 at home against the Miami Trace Panthers at 7 p.m. at Richards Memorial Field.
