HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Indians and Clinton-Massie Falcons battled closely at times in their non-conference game on Tuesday night. In the end, though, it was the home team Indians winning over their former conference counterpart by a 68-54 score.

In what was also their first home game of the season, the Indians led at the conclusion of each quarter and trailed just once for a total of 19 game seconds en route to their fourth win in five games this season.

HHS (4-1) had three players reach double-figure scoring, with Hunter Price leading the way with 18 points as he collected nine two-point baskets. Price finished with a double-double, as he also collected 10 rebounds in the win.

“Hunter is a problem (for opponents),” HHS head coach Miles Burton said. “People talk about guys putting on 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason, and most of the time that is an exaggeration, but it’s not with Hunter. He’s lived in the weight room, and you can see it. He’s a tremendous basketball player, and he guards our toughest matchup each night. He held (Jordan) Redman to two points, and he scored and rebounded well.

“Hunter gets better every week, and I’m excited to see what he turns into.”

There was also Lawton Parry scoring 15 points for the Indians, with all of his points coming from five 3-pointers in the first three quarters. Parry also finished with six rebounds.

“Lawton can shoot with the best of them, and I’ve coached some good shooters and he’s up there right at the top of the list,” Burton said. “His knees are all banged up, but he pushed through today, and I’m super proud of him. Lawton is a problem for defenses because he stretches the floor for us.

“Without Lawton, the offense won’t have moved as quickly as it did.”

Quintin Captain finished with 13 points in the win, with 11 of his points coming in the second half. Captain made four two-point baskets, a 3-pointer and had two converted free throws in the win. Captain added three rebounds to his final totals.

Also for the Indians, Brad Miller finished with seven points, while Jakwon Clark (four rebounds) and Ryan Scott (four rebounds) each totaled six points. Rounding out the scoring was Coltin Hunter with three points and three rebounds.

Kody Zantene led the Falcons with 12 points, while Blake Ireland totaled 11 points for Clinton-Massie.

The score was tied three times within the first three minutes of play to begin the game, with Clinton-Massie taking their only lead with 5:22 on the clock for a 8-6 advantage following a steal and layup by Ireland.

Following a timeout by the Indians, there was a 3-pointer from Price as he sank the first of his five treys with 5:03 left in the opening frame for a 9-8 Hillsboro lead. From there, it was a jumper by Miller, and later another two points by Miller — with the assist by Captain — that gave the Indians an advantage of 13-10 with 3:16 on the first quarter clock.

Following the two points by Miller, the Indians added another 3-pointer by Price, and then a fast break lay-up from Clark put the Indians’ lead at 18-10 with 2:35 left in the first frame. Eventually there was a layup by Price, and a 3-pointer from Scott, that put the Indians ahead by seven points at the conclusion of the opening quarter at 23-16.

The second quarter saw the visiting Falcons outscore the Indians, 14-13 for a 36-30 HHS lead at halftime. That second quarter saw Parry sink two more 3-pointers, four points by Price and three points from Hunter.

When the third quarter came to a close, the Falcons outscored the host Indians, 14-12 for a 48-44 Indians lead. Hillsboro’s third frame consisted of 3-pointers by Captain and Parry, plus two points apiece by Scott, Clark and Price.

The Indians pulled away from the Falcons in the fourth and final frame, outscoring Clinton-Massie, 20-10 en route to the 14-point win.

In their 20-point outburst in the final eight minutes, HHS had eight points from Captain, one point by Scott, eight points by Price and three points from Miller.

For the game, the Indians totaled seven 3-pointers and were 5-of-11 from the free-throw line. The Falcons totaled three 3-pointers and finished 3-of-4 in their free-throw shooting.

Next for Hillsboro is a non-conference road game at Eastern on Jan. 2.

In the JV game, the Indians won by a 37-36 score. Leading scorers for HHS were Jayse Middleton with nine points, Bryce Parsons with eight points and Canaan Griffith with seven points.

The freshman game saw the Indians fall by a 34-32 score. Jack Wagoner totaled eight points to lead HHS in scoring, while teammate Korbin Adams totaled six points.
