HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Indians led by 14 points twice in the first three frames, then saw their lead drop to just two points in the third quarter against the visiting Clermont Northeastern Rockets. The fourth quarter was a whole different story with the Indians rallying past the Rockets for the 78-57 non-conference victory, their third of the season.

This was also the first loss of the season for CNE, but on a brighter note for the Rockets, Skyler Schmidt scored his 1,000th career point with 1:44 left in the third frame, as he needed 23 points to reach that milestone entering the game. Schmidt scored the final two points to reach 1,000 points scored with a dunk that brought the away fans to their feet in celebration. Schmidt ended the game with 28 points.

As for the rest of the third frame, the Indians saw their lead fall to two points with 35 seconds left in the quarter following a 3-pointer by Jerryd Burns, but the lead went up to two points following two free throws from Caleb Crawford for a 54-50 lead at the end of the third frame.

The Indians (3-4) and Rockets (6-1) exchanged points to start the fourth quarter with Crawford putting the Indians ahead by six points, only to see Schmidt added two points to the CNE side for a 56-52 score with 6:59 left in regulation.

From that point forward, the game went in favor of the host Indians, as their aggression, rebounding and ability to make baskets under pressure ignited them past the Rockets with a run of 13 straight points, starting with a 3-pointer by Ryan Scott with 6:26 on the clock while being fouled. From there, Quintin Captain sank a 3-pointer with 5:53 left in the final quarter for a 10-point lead of 62-52.

The run of scoring continued with a put-back basket by Brad Miller. Next were two free-throws converted by Jakwon Clark, and 25 seconds later he added two more points off a fast break for a 16-point lead at 68-52 with 4:26 on the scoreboard. The final point of the run came off a free throw made by Ethan Parry at the 3:44 mark of the fourth for a 17-point lead at 69-52.

Schmidt broke up the scoring drive with a free throw of his own, but the Indians were at it again with a basket by Silas Simmons. That in turn was answered with a bucket from CNE’s Owen Fishback.

HHS added another six points before the game was finished — all via free throws — from Hunter Price, Miller, Clark and Ethan Parry.

“CNE is a great program, and going back to Tuesday, we ares better than that, but we haven’t been able to show that to our home fans. Credit our fans, they are bringing it every single night, and I was happy for our guys they were able to show how hard we’ve been working,” HHS head coach Miles Burton said. “CNE is well-coached, and Skyler Schmidt is a great player, and I’m happy for him to get his 1,000th point.

“This win is all credit to the guys, and we were well-prepared, and our coaching staff watched a lot of film, and put together a good game plan. We only had 48 hours to do that, and credit to the guys for buying in and doing what the had to do. We just talking about putting all 32 minutes together and that is what we put on the top of each scouting report, and tonight my guys did that.”

The Indians as a team made 12 3-pointers, with seven made from Scott, who led HHS with 22 points. In all, the Indians had four players reach double-figure scoring and after Scott those players were Price with 13 points, Clark with 12 points and Miller with 11 points. In all, nine HHS players scored points in the win.

Getting to the 21-point win wasn’t easy for the Tribe, because they battled tough in the first frame for a nine-point lead of 20-11 when that quarter came to a close. Hillsboro sank four 3-pointers in the first quarter, plus added four two-point baskets. The score was tied twice early on with baskets by Crawford and Price, and the first of Hillsboro’s four first-quarter treys came off a shot by Clark. Later in the frame, the Indians made three straight 3-pointers with two consecutive by Scott and one by Lawton Parry for a 20-6 lead with 46 seconds left in the first frame.

CNE ended the first quarter with two points by Schmidt and a 3-pointer by Blake King at the buzzer for the 20-11 score.

The Indians outscored the Rockets, 14-13 in the second quarter with HHS having a lead as large as 14 points with 5:22 on the clock following a put-back basket by Price. The second frame also saw two more 3-pointers by Scott and a total of four points each by Simmons and Price for the 34-24 score at halftime.

The Indians had a 20-point third frame, but on the other side the Rockets scored 26 points, and with as late as 35 seconds left in the third cut the Indians’ lead down from as high as 11 points in the quarter to just two points at 52-50.

In the third for the Indians, Scott had a third consecutive quarter of two 3-pointers, while Clark made a 3-pointer, as did Price. Also in the third, Crawford made two free throws for the Indians, and six points off three buckets were scored by Miller for what became a 54-50 lead after three frames.

CNE’s third-quarter scoring included five points by Burns, a 3-pointer from Logan Pottorf, 14 points by Schmidt and two points each off baskets by Bryce Reece and King.

The fourth frame for the Rockets saw HHS keep them to seven points, while the Indians collected 24 points with Scott again sinking a 3-pointer, giving him at least one 3-pointer in each quarter played on Friday night.

Also adding to the Indians scoring in the fourth were Ethan Parry, Captain, Scott, Simmons, Clark, Price, Crawford and Miller.

For the game, the Indians totaled 15 two-point baskets, 12 3-pointers and they were 12-of-17 from the free-throw line. CNE finished with 18 two-point baskets, four 3-pointers and they were 9-of-17 in their free-throw attempts.

Unofficially, the Indians collected 33 rebounds (14 offensive), while CNE had 27 rebounds (11 offensive). HHS also had 18 turnovers, and CNE had 15 for the game.

Next for Hillsboro is a Frontier Athletic Conference rivalry showdown on Saturday night at McClain High School against the McClain Tigers in a five-game day that starts with the JV and varsity girls basketball games, followed by the freshman, JV and varsity boys games at MHS.
