The Lady Indians (8-11) had a much better performance in the second half offensively where they scored 14 points, but they did allow 17 points for a 44-29 deficit after three frames. In the third, Madi Marsh brought HHS to within 11 points following a jumper, and that was followed by a jumper by Josie Hopkins for a 28-21 score with 6:26 left in the third.

Later in the frame, Karleigh Hopkins scored two points with a jumper from the corner, making it a 33-23 deficit at the 4:55 mark of the third. The Lady Broncos answered with six straight points to increase their lead to 41-23 with 3:08 left in the quarter.

To end the third frame, Kayden Watson, Jordan Moberly and Lana Grover added to the HHS side of the scoring to make it a 15-point scoring differential.

Western Brown won the fourth frame at 14-12, finalizing their 17-point win over HHS.

Scoring points for HHS in the fourth frame were Kira Watson, Kelsey Burns, Kayden Watson, Grover and Jordan Moberly. For the game, HHS totaled four 3-pointers, with two from Kayden Watson and one each from Kelsey Burns and Grover.

“It sounds like a broken record, but I am really proud of the kids’ effort,” HHS girls coach JR Moberly said. “We played three games in the past four days, and a lot of my kids are playing JV and varsity and logging a lot of minutes. I thought that showed today. Our shots didn’t fall, and when you get tired the decision-making isn’t the best, so we had some untimely turnovers.

“We got out-rebounded, and those were difficult things to overcome. Western Brown has a nice ball club and took advantage of our lack of size in the paint. Western Brown’s kids played hard too, and they they beat us today.”

Leading HHS in scoring was Kayden Watson with 10 points, followed by Grover and Moberly with six points each. Josie Hopkins totaled five points, and scoring four points each were Karleigh Hopkins and Marsh.

Also adding to the HHS Lady Indians scoring were Kaley Burns and Kelsey Burns with three points each, Riley Moberly with two points and Kira Watson with one points. In all, 10 players scored points for the Lady Indians.

The Western Brown girls was led by Tessa Pinkerton with 15 points and Cana Kleemyer with 13 points.

Next for HHS is a home game on Wednesday vs. Chillicothe in Frontier Athletic Conference action.

In the boys game, the Hillsboro Indians lost by a 49-41 score in the non-conference game against the visiting Western Brown Broncos.

The first half was not too kind to the Indians, as they scored just five points in the first, but they did follow that up with an 11-point second frame. On the other side of the scoring, the visiting Broncos scored nine points in the first and 14 points in the second for a halftime lead over HHS of 23-16.

For HHS (6-9) in the first frame, they had a 3-pointer by Ethan Watson and a two-point basket from Phillip Mycroft. For the game, Mycroft led HHS with 11 points.

In the second, the Indians trailed by as many as 13 points with 1:29 left in the second, with the score 23-10. HHS managed to cut that second-quarter deficit to seven points by the time halftime arrived at 23-16. For HHS in the second, Mycroft scored five points, and Caleb Crawford tallied six points in the frame, as Crawford finished the game with 10 points.

The third frame was the best offensive quarter for the Indians as they added 16 points to their totals with four players being a part of the scoring. HHS battled tough in the third, even winning the frame at 16-14. At one point in the third, the Indians were within two points of the Broncos following a layup by Mycroft with 44 seconds on the clock.

Mason Swayne — who totaled nine points for the game —broke out in the third with two 3-pointers to keep HHS within striking distance of the Broncos, with those 3-pointers coming at the 4:22 mark and later around the 3:00 mark, sinking the trey from the corner in front of the home bench. The second 3-pointer by Swayne made it a 32-29 deficit.

In the fourth, HHS got to within six points on two occasions, but not any closer as they were outscored 12-9 in the final eight minutes. Adding to the HHS scoring in the final frame were Hayden Haines, Watson, Mycroft and Crawford.

“Turnovers hurt us, and for the past two games that has hurt us,” HHS boys head coach Bruce Miles said. “Our guys fought tonight for four quarters, but the last two games we just aren’t going to beat good basketball teams by making turnovers.”

HHS totaled five 3-pointers in the game with Swayne having two and Watson sinking three in the first, third and fourth quarters, as he also totaled nine points in the loss to Western Brown.

The Broncos were led by Clayton Wolfe with 18 points.

“We talked about playing better than we did Friday,” Miles said. “We are still a good basketball team, and I think we have lost sight of that. We have so many young guys, and some of the upperclassmen we don’t have right now, but that’s life. We have to understand if we do the right things and take care of the basketball we can beat good teams.

“We gave Western Brown too many opportunities tonight. We just have to get better at some things.”

On Friday night the Indians lost to the host Miami Trace Panthers, 51-42 at MTHS.

For the Indians, they were led by Ethan Watson with 20 points, and he was followed by Caleb Crawford with 14 points. Also for HHS, Mycroft totaled four points, while both Swayne and Haines each scored two points.

HHS finished 8-of-11 from the free-throw line at MTHS and totaled three 3-pointers, all from Crawford.

MTHS was led by Cameron Carter with 19 points and Darby Tyree with 17 points.

Next for HHS is a nonconference game at Goshen Tuesday night.
