A dominant effort in their 2017 season opener Saturday afternoon left the Hillsboro Indians all smiles as they defeated the visiting Eastern Brown Warriors, 8-1 in non-conference action at Hillsboro High School.
The Indians won their first three games of the season in ’16, then didn’t win a game the remainder of the way, so to get back to the win column the first time out was big for the Indians, according to HHS head coach John Weber.
“This was a great way to open up the season, especially since we haven’t won since the third game of last season, so this is a great way to start out,” Weber said. “We passed the ball well, talked well, but there are a few things we still need to work on.

“We put the ball in the back of the net today, so overall we played pretty well.”
The Indians led by a 5-0 score at the conclusion of the first half.
In that opening half, senior Marshall Ward scored the first goal of the season with an assist from sophomore Titus Heiser. Next on the scoreboard was junior Logan Crafton with his goal assisted by fellow junior Quinn Conlon for the 2-0 score.
Hillsboro’s third goal came from senior Tyler Loch as it too was assisted by Conlon. The score went to 4-0 when junior Noah Brandenberry scored a goal with the assist from senior Joseph Rudy. The fifth goal of the first half came with an unassisted goal from Loch.
The second half saw a Heiser goal assisted by junior Andrew Gunderman, followed by two goals by Rudy to complete the HHS scoring.
“In years past, we would have had trouble scoring this many goals in a game, so scoring in general has been huge for us,” Weber said. “We were on their third of the field most of the time, except for a couple breakaways they had.”
At goal for HHS was sophomore Jason Lovlie with four saves.
The win leaves the Indians at 1-0-0 overall. Their next match will be on Tuesday, Aug. 22 versus Unioto. They will also play on Thursday, Aug. 24 on the road at Western Brown. Both matches are non-conference.
To round out the month of August, the Indians will host the Wilmington Hurricane on Saturday, Aug. 26, followed by two consecutive Frontier Athletic Conference matches on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at Washington and Thursday, Aug. 31 versus Jackson.
