The Hillsboro High School bowling program has a long tradition of success in recent years, with this year being no different. The boys and girls teams have a perfect 14-0 record almost midway through its season, along with three Top 6 finishes in their first two tournaments of the season, putting the program among the elite teams in the state.
“The coaching staff credits the amazing work ethic of the kids that make all the difference. These kids work over and beyond practices and matches on the finer points of the game,” the Indians’ coaches said. “The ability to shoot on different oil patterns and in different bowling houses is a lot of what sets us apart from other teams. We have a very tough senior class of boys and girls, which really helps a lot. That, and one of the strongest freshman classes we have ever had in the history of the 8 year program.”

Leading the Indians to every victory is senior Christian McConehea with a 220 average.
“We can’t say enough about this kid,” Hillsboro’s coaching staff said. “His skill is only matched by his intensity on the lanes. This young man has accomplished so much this year including, shooting a remarkable 300 on Dec. 7 against Jackson High School.”
A 300 game had been accomplished just three times in the HHS bowling program history and only twice in match play.
“The thing about Christian is every game he sets such a high standard for himself but still remains a teammate. Christian sets a high pace for his team. If he shoots really big, his team will follow him and shoot big with him,” HHS coaches said.
On Dec. 7, after his 300 game, McConehea followed up with a 224 score the next game. The Indians stepped up and averaged 228 as a team with 1,140 for one game.
“We have a lot of hardworking boys and a fantastic freshman class with Hunter Springer, along with seniors Brendon Ormes, Ty Alexander and Andrew Louderback rounding out the varsity lineup,” HHS coaches said. “Another reason we have such great success is our bench is so deep. Tyler Snapp, Jawaun Jones, Jesse Hart and senior Deon Burns will go in at a moment’s notice and put up a huge score whenever called on to do so.”
For the HHS girls team, they started out slow for the year, considering they graduated a powerhouse team last year. The Lady Indians have stepped up to retake the mantle and move forward.
With a perfect 14-0 record the girls are now starting to show signs of shooting the numbers we are used to seeing from them. HHS is led by sophomore Selena Mingua, who currently holds an average of 195 for the year.
“The girls have destroyed every team put in front of them this season. We have not bowled to our potential at this point yet. We have a few key players out, and we have struggled to perform to our ability in tournaments so far this year,” HHS coaches said. “However, we have been improving, shooting higher and higher every match.
“We have the benefit with two of the best freshman girls we have had in four years. Taylor Jordan and Maddie Tomko are fantastic. These girls work very hard and are becoming tough competitors.
“Rounding out the starting lineup for the ladies are senior Olivia Wilson, junior Haley Hughes and sophomore Jazlen Jones. With seniors Brook Trusty and Breanna Little coming back in the lineup in January, we will be where we want to be.”
The coaching staff said they couldn't be more pleased with the progress of the program thus far in the year.
“We have a busy tournament and FAC schedule this next month,” they said. “These kids have goals and the skill to achieve them. All they have to do is step up and take it.”
