Hillsboro Girls Track & Field Preview

The girls track and field team of the Hillsboro Lady Indians has a new head coach in Anthony Amore, as he takes over for former head coach Sarah Horsley, going from the assistant spot last season.
Hillsboro’s 2016 team has five seniors, two juniors, six sophomores and 11 freshmen for a total of 24 athletes on the team this season.
“So far, we’ve got some good work in when the weather allows it, but this is Ohio, so you never know what the weather will be like,” Amore said. “We are getting training in, and we are not where we want to be, but it is early into the season, so you always want to be further ahead than where you are.
“Tuesday will show us where we are at, and we can reevaluate from there.”
Among the girls who the Lady Indians will look to be team leaders this season will be senior Reaghan Haines in a variety of events.
“Reaghan will be one of the top leaders for the 4x800-meter relay team, along with the open 800m run,” Amore said. “She’s more of a mid-distance runner, and she’ll most likely run either the 1600 or the 3200m race, depending on how the track meet is going and where we feel we can get the most points from her.”
With the season nearing, Amore described how he sees the team.

“We are a fairly young team,” he said. “Two-thirds of the team are freshmen and sophomores, and we are still trying to figure out where we can fit everybody in as they work to get better at certain events.
“This is my first year as a head coach, so I don’t know what it will be like coaching such a young team compared to a veteran team. We do have some girls who have a lot of potential, we can see it, but it is about getting their self-confidence where it belongs and getting them to believe in that … believing they can compete.”
HHS is still working on their field events before the start of the season.
“You always want to have more time with field events, but there is some potential to have some good things happen, but once we get some marks to see where we are at, we’ll know better where we stand,” Amore said. “We’ve worked some on field events, and I see potential with the field events, but the girls have to believe that as well. It will be interesting in seeing the younger girls with those events as they become more confident.”
