On Wednesday, Feb. 2, the Hillsboro Lady Indians defeated the visiting Wilmington Lady Hurricane by a 51-32 score in non-conference action at HHS.

HHS led after each frame played, including a 13-6 score after the first quarter came to a close, building a seven-point lead on two occasions in the quarter.

“We really wanted to mix things up, so we knew we had to mix it up to keep (Wilmington) at bay,” HHS head coach Chad Fields said. “Our girls did a fantastic job. They are really sticking to our game plans now and believing in what we are doing. I couldn’t be more proud of our defensive effort because we told them that’s where this game was going to be won.

“Our goal tonight was to hold them to under 30, and we feel if we can hold teams to around that 30-point mark we can be successful, and other than one quarter of basketball against Western Brown, we are playing some pretty good basketball. I like where we are at.”

In the 13-point first frame, Gracie Dean made three baskets for six points, while Blake Herdman knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:07 left in the frame. Also in the first quarter, Eden Edenfield and Rylie Scott each scored a basket.

HHS outscored the Lady ’Cane 12-5 in the second frame, as Dean made a 3-pointer and a two-point basket, while Herdman scored five points in the quarter, including a second 3-pointer in the first half, plus two made free-throw attempts. Edenfield added a two-point basket as well with the Lady Indians leading 25-11 at halftime.

Hillsboro was even more successful in the third quarter as they came out of the locker room with a 16-4 quarter, leading to a 41-15 lead after the frame was complete, building their lead to 26 points.

The Lady Indians began the third with baskets by Dean and Herdman, followed by a bucket from Edenfield for a 31-11 advantage with 5:48 left in the frame. After two points by Wilmington, Scott, Dean and Mya Bell completed the third quarter scoring with Scott knocking down a two-point bucket, Dean with two layups and Bell ringing in a 3-pointer at the 1:05 mark from the corner of the court for the 41-15 lead.

HHS scored 10 points in the final quarter, while Wilmington scored 17 points. For HHS, Dean, Bell, Scott, Sinai Roberts and Peighton Bledsoe each scored two points.

Dean led HHS with 19 points, followed by Herdman with 10 points. The rest of the HHS final scoring included Bell (five points), Scott (seven points), Roberts (two points), Edenfield (six points) and Bledsoe (two points).

Wilmington was led in scoring by Elle Martin and Katie Murphy with eight points each.
