The Hillsboro Indians played a Week 10 regular-season game on Saturday night, with the loss on Halloween coming against the Portsmouth West Senators by a 42-13 score, wrapping up the 2020 season.
This season, the Indians’ two wins came against the McClain Tigers and the Clermont Northeastern Rockets, but in Week 10, other than the opening drive, things didn’t go so well as the Indians struggled to keep possession of the football.
As for the opening drive by Hillsboro, it took just two plays to reach the end zone. The first play from their own 38-yard line ended up being a pass from Chris Stout to Lawton Parry over the middle of the field for a gain of 61 yards and a first down at the PW 1-yard line.
The very next play saw Stout break through the Senators’ defense for the 1-yard touchdown run with 11:18 left in the first quarter. The PAT chance was the Indians going for a 2-point conversion, but the attempt failed, leaving the Indians in front by a 6-0 score.
Portsmouth West then began their dominance of the game, starting with a nine-play drive that ended with them in the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run by Mitchell Irwin. Their PAT kick was no good, leaving the score tied at 6-6 with 6:22 left in the first quarter.
The ensuing play by the Indians on offense was an intercepted pass by Luke Bradford of the Senators. Seven plays later, Portsmouth West took the lead at “The Rock” with a 20-yard touchdown run by Jeffery Bishop, as he went around the defense and straight to the end zone with 3:00 left in the first quarter. The PAT was no good, leaving the Indians down by a 12-6 score.
The Indians lost possession again, as the runner had the ball knocked loose by PWHS and the Senators player slid out of the end zone for the touchback in the second quarter. After two gains of 30 or more yards, and then later a fourth down conversion, it was first-and-goal at the 1-yard line for PWHS.
The Senators scored a touchdown on a 1-yard rush by Hunter Brown for six points with 2:36 left in the second frame. They converted a 2-point attempt off a pass to Bishop for a 20-6 lead.
On the next drive, HHS was intercepted for a touchdown by Ashton Klaiber of Portsmouth West with around 2:00 left in the quarter. The 2-point conversion pass from Irwin to Ryan Sissel was good, putting the Senators ahead, 28-6, as that score stood until halftime.
After receiving the ball to start the third frame, PWHS scored on the opening drive of the second half with a touchdown by Andrew Jones from Irwin for a 16-yard score with 10 minutes left in the frame. The 2-point run by Hunter Brown put the home team ahead by 30 points at 36-6.
HHS was intercepted again, but the Indians defense fought back with a sack by Zach Burns, and then on fourth down, the Tribe had a sack by Shane Sullivan to force a turnover on downs.
The Indians’ offense lost possession of the ball on a fumble that PWHS recovered with 2:45 left in the third. The Senators scored their final touchdown with 10:30 left in the fourth quarter when Carl Howard blasted his way through the HHS defensive line for a 1-yard score. Derek Whitt blocked the PAT attempt, leading the Senators in front by a 42-6 score.
Hillsboro’s final score of the season came on a drive that included a 36-yard reception by Parry, and then the touchdown came off a 24-yard pitch to Canaan Griffith for the score with 7:11 left in the game. The PAT by Nick Turner was good, leaving the score at 42-13.
The Indians end the 2020 season at 2-8 overall. Portsmouth West ends the season at 6-4.
