MOUNT ORAB – After weeks of discussions from the Ohio High School Athletic Association to the office of Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, high school football season kicked off Friday, Aug. 28.
For Hillsboro Indians' fans, the start to an abbreviated, six-game regular-season schedule was less than satisfying, as the Western Brown Broncos galloped unbridled to a 62-6 win.
After teams and fans were instructed on social distancing, it took just two minutes for Western Brown quarterback Drew Novak to hook up with wide receiver Gary Powell for a 36-yard scoring strike. Evan Grimes followed with the first of his eight straight extra points, and it was a 7-0 game.
On the Indians' ensuing possession, a fumble by Jayse Middleton was recovered by Evan Conatser, and the Broncos were back in business. Cade Chisman capped off Western Brown's second possession with a three-yard touchdown run. Grimes' PAT made it 14-0.
Hillsboro had positive yardage from Middleton and quarterback Christopher Stout on their next possession. However, a big tackle for a loss by Brian Newberry put the Indians in a third-and-long situation. After an incomplete pass, Hillsboro punted the football.
From the 5:04 mark of the first period to the 3:55 mark of the period, the Broncos quickly doubled their scoring output. Another Novak completion to Powell was good for a 36-yard scoring strike and a 21-0 lead. Sixty-nine seconds later, Chisman ran it in from five yards, and just that quick, it was 28-0.
The Indians had a few encouraging plays, offensively, in the second quarter. Stout had a nice completion to wide receiver Nicholas Lewis for a big gain, only for the Indians to commit a 15-yard penalty. Another drive ended when Quentin Collins intercepted a Hillsboro pass in the end zone.
Meanwhile, the Broncos' fast-paced, no-huddle offense continued to work to perfection in the second quarter. Novak connected with Logan Campbell for his third TD pass with 10:50 left in the half. Another Chisman touchdown gave Western Brown a commanding 42-0 lead at the 6:41 mark of the second quarter.
Chisman added two more touchdowns before the first half came to an end, giving new Head Coach Nick Osborne's Broncos a 56-0 halftime command.
With rain on the way, a running clock in the second half and Osborne and Hillsboro Head Coach Jack O'Rourke playing many of the underclassmen, the game ended with Western Brown on top, 62-6. Middleton scored Hillsboro's lone touchdown in the third period.
The Indians (0-1) travel to Fayette County to play the Miami Trace Panthers on Friday, Sept. 4.
