Hillsboro falls to Lady Astros

LEES CREEK - Scoring in double figures for three of the four quarters played wasn't enough for the Hillsboro Lady Indians Wednesday evening, as an 18-point outburst by the East Clinton Lady Astros gave them a 48-43 non-league win over HHS.
East Clinton led 13-11 after the first eight minutes ticked off the clock, but HHS tied the game at 23 at the end of the first half by outscoring the Lady Astros 12-10 in the second quarter.
HHS took a 32-30 advantage after three quarters by netting nine points in the third frame. HHS was unable to hold on late in the fourth as EC won the final quarter 18-11.
In the final frame HHS trailed by two points until Jenni Willey netted 1 of 2 from the free-throw line to bring the Lady Indians within one point of tying the game.
But the Lady Astros scored on the ensuing possession to build a three point advantage with 19 seconds left in regulation.
The Lady Indians had opportunities to regain the lead, but missed two chances to take the lead or tie the game.
East Clinton's Finley made two free throws after an HHS intentional foul to seal the five-point win.
Megan Barnes, who made two 3-pointers, finished with 13 points, followed by an 11 point effort from Heather Storer. Shelby Coyle finished with 10 points for the Lady Indians.
Willey gained five points, followed by Julie Shafer and Annemarie Stamper each netting two points.
"I am extremely proud the way the girls played (Wednesday). We had our chances to win this ball game on East Clinton's court," HHS head coach Herb Mihalik said. "Megan Barnes and Shelby Coyle had their best shooting games. We played ten different girls against East Clinton and all of the girls contributed in positive ways."
HHS was 13 of 20 from the free-throw line, with East Clinton going 13 of 21 from the line.
Naes led EC with 19 points, followed by Finley with 13 points, including one 3-pointer.
The loss drops HHS to 1-16 overall.
HHS will play again Saturday as they are scheduled to host South Central Ohio League foe Clinton-Massie with a JV start at noon. The Lady Indians will celebrate thier seniors before the start of the varsity contest.
