Hillsboro Elementary teacher Fawn Girard completed her first trip to the World Archery 3D Championships Thursday in Robion, France, finishing in 13th place in the world.

Girard, of Martinsville, qualified as a No. 1 seed for women’s barebow during the trials event in June.

This year marked the first year a USA Archery team competed in the world championship, which included 32 total countries.

Competition began Tuesday with the first qualification round, followed by the second qualification round Wednesday. The qualification rounds included 24 targets each. Girard, who was competing in the women’s barebow event, qualified for the Top 16 with a total of 679 points to move on to the elimination round.

Girard was the only member of the USA Archery team to qualify for the Top 16 in women’s barebow.

The first elimination round began Thursday, where the Top 8 advanced to the second elimination round. Girard totaled 69 points in the 12-target round for her 13th-place finish overall.

“This was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever been fortunate enough to be a part of,” Girard wrote on her Facebook Thursday afternoon in France. “I executed great shots and so did the other women in my class. I will never complain about the distance of a shot or the terrain ever again in the USA.”

Girard added that “to be the 13th-best woman in the world” in the barebow event is “amazing.”

Girard lives in Martinsville with her husband and 7-year-old son and is a third-grade special education teacher at Hillsboro Elementary.
