HILLSBORO – Having an entirely new roster — as the Hillsboro Indians boys tennis team included all first-year tennis players — was the recipe for success for the LaRue Turner-led squad. The Indians have earned the Frontier Athletic Conference championship for the ’21 season, the first season back after spring sports were canceled a year ago.
The Indians not only overcame the obstacles of returning to a sport after it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic last spring, but this season the Indians didn’t have a single player return to the program from the most recent season, which was 2019.
“This has been an exciting season, and it has been good for the boys to win the league,” Turner said this week. “We didn’t have a single player return from the ’19 roster, and it was tough not having a season last year. This year the guys have picked up the sport and have played well in the league.”
This season, Lawton Parry has played first singles and has been one of the standout players for the Indians this season as well as being named the FAC Player of the Year. Before Wednesday’s non-conference match, Parry had a first singles record of 14 wins and two losses.
In third singles this season, Shane Sullivan built his record to 13 wins and one loss (undefeated in FAC matches), while second singles player Blake Tira had an overall mark of 8-6.
In ’21, the Indians split FAC matches with Washington and Chillicothe. HHS swept season meetings with Jackson and Miami Trace.
