HILLSBORO – The Hillsboro Indians boys soccer team left no doubt they were Division II DE District Sectional champions on Wednesday night, as they defended their home field and defeated the visiting Logan Elm Braves, 3-1.
The Indians led by a 2-1 score at halftime, then added one final goal in the second half.
“These guys played their hearts out, and this is the best soccer they’ve played all year,” HHS head coach Adam Schelling said. “We went to their place last week, and they beat us 2-0. We didn’t come out with intensity, we didn’t come out ready to play and we looked bad there. We came out this game knowing we had to step up, and the guys stepped up and played well.”
For the Indians, their first goal was scored by Peyton Robinson, but the Braves tied the score at 1-1 in the opening half. The Indians regained the lead with a goal from Landon Weber, who also finished the night with two assists.
“Landon Weber scored when we needed him to, and the first goal by Peyton Robinson set the tone for the game, putting us up 1-0, and we had some strong intensity after that. We just ran with it after that,” Schelling said.
In the second half, the Indians built a two-goal advantage that stayed for the remainder of the sectional final contest with Cohen Myers for the 3-1 advantage for Hillsboro. Myers also added an assist to his game totals.
The win moves Hillsboro to 8-9-1 overall on the season. They have won their past four of their past five games, with wins over Blanchester, Jackson, McClain and now Logan Elm. The loss was to Logan Elm last week in a regular-season game by a 2-0 score.
Also this season, the Indians have wins against Eastern, McClain, Southeastern and Miami Trace.
The defense of the Indians was strong, especially in the second half. The HHS defense consisted of Nick Turner, George Kuntz, Dylan Rigsby and Charles Schneider.
“All four defenders rocked it,” Schelling said. “The defense was winning everything.”
Next for the Indians is a road game in the district semifinals, where they will travel to face the state-ranked Marietta Tigers on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. at MHS. Marietta is 15-0-2 overall, winning their past four games. They defeated Sheridan 11-0 on Oct. 20 in their sectional final match.
“Marietta is a solid team, undefeated and they are just a great team,” Schelling said. “We are going to have to come up with a game plan and be ready to play on Tuesday.”
