The Hillsboro Indians boys soccer team played strong against Frontier Athletic Conference opponent Jackson on Thursday at HHS, but they didn’t get the ball past the opposing keeper, leading to a 1-0 loss FAC play.
The Indians and Ironmen were both scoreless at halftime, but Jackson put the ball past the keeper on a penalty kick in the second half. Leading up to the only goal of the contest, a call from the official where the keeper collided with the Jackson player was ruled a penalty, resulting in the PK opportunity.
The clock read 9:11 when Jackson scored the lone goal of the FAC contest for the 1-0 lead.
Even with the goal opportunity going against them, the Indians had plenty of chances to score a goal in the second half before the PK took place.
HHS had many near goals in the second half as kicks just sailed too high or too wide, but they were able to pressure the visitors defense for a good portion of the game. In the first half, the game was played close to equal as both teams battled mostly in the infield.
In the final two minutes, Hillsboro had a couple final chances to score a goal, but a corner kick was stopped, and with 1:15 left in the game, a kick toward the JHS keeper was too high, landing out of play.
Hillsboro’s loss moves them to 0-3 in the FAC and 2-7-1 overall.
“My defense played lights out, and they were the reason we were in the game,” Hillsboro boys soccer head coach Adam Schelling said. “Nick Turner, Dylan Rigsby, George Kuntz and Charlie Schneider all played well, and my goalie Will Hart, he had some good saves. They (Jackson) didn’t have much attack on us.
“We have to finish shots, and most of the game was possessed in the middle of the field, by both teams. We had opportunities, we had shots, but we just couldn’t convert them.”
Schelling also spoke about more players who stood out for the Indians.
“We had a lot of practice time, and we revamped the way we run our formation, and it has really worked,” he said. “We pushed harder, and it helped us on the attack, and we want every 50-50 ball. Dylan Schurman played well for us.”
Next for the Indians is a non-conference game on Monday, Sept. 20 at home against the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs.
