The Hillsboro Indians boys bowling team will return to the OHSAA Division II State Bowling Tournament this Saturday, after winning the Southeast/East district championship on Feb. 24.

The Indians won the district title with team games of 956, 995 and 1,111 and Baker scores of 203, 183, 210, 220, 144 and 202 for a total of 4,224.

“The boys bowled very well with some huge contributions off the bench,” Hillsboro head coach Shane Ison said. “As their coach, I'm very proud of how they have progressed this season, never giving up and having each other's backs. We have talked all season about the next man up and the seniors stepping up in the big moments.”

The Indians were led by senior Tyler King, who won the district individual championship with games of 213, 196 and 264 for a 673 series.

“Tyler has had a stellar postseason,” Ison said. “So far, he was the highest bowler in the Southeast sectionals, and now he has the Southeast/East District individual championship as well. He battled sickness all week. He wasn't going to be stopped by anything.”

Freshman Hayden Miller was second for the Indians with scores of 227, 211 and 213 for a 651 series.

“Hayden was not going to let age be a factor,” Ison said. “He looked like a seasoned veteran. The kid threw big shot after big shot today.”

Senior Hunter Lowe was third for the Indians, finishing at 198, 182 and 247 for a 627 series.

“Hunter worked very hard this week in practice,” Ison said. “The pattern that we bowled on this week wasn't his favorite, but man, did he chew up some pins today. He showed what senior leadership is all about.”

Senior Sajoun Jones had games of 181, 212 and 212 for a 605 series.

“Sajoun was another one that didn't have the easiest path to the pocket, but he wasn't going to be denied,” Ison said.

Sophomores Christian McConehea and Brendon Ormes rounded out the scoring for the Indians. McConehea bowled a 137, with Ormes finishing with games of 194 and 175. Ores also gave the team seven out of eight strikes in the first four Baker games.

“Christian started for the Indians, and Brendon finished it up,” Ison said. “Christian was battling sickness all week as well, and the pattern didn't match up with him, but his fellow teammates had his back.

“It was very nice to see Brendon have some success with all the hard work that he has put into this season.”

This is the third consecutive season the Indians have qualified for the state tournament.

The Indians will compete in the Division II State Tournament on Saturday, March 4 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl. The qualifying round will begin at 10:30 a.m.
