On Saturday, Jan. 7, the Hillsboro High School bowling teams attended the First Capital Baker Bash held at Shawnee Lanes in Chillicothe.

There were 14 schools that attended this event this year, including five South Central Ohio League members.

This was a Baker-only event, with the qualifying round consisting of 16 baker games. The top eight teams in the bracket then play best out of three to the winner.

The Hillsboro boys team had ups and downs through qualifying, but rose to the top and ended up finishing with a second seed, scoring 2,836. The ladies came out firing and led the qualifying round from the very first game. They qualified with a No. 1 seed, scoring 2,615.

In the second round, Hillsboro boys went against Washington of the SCOL and defeated them in two games. The Lady Indians faced Unioto and took them out in two as well.

In the next round of four, the Indians faced another SCOL team in Chillicothe and took them out in two games. The Lady Indians, however, struggled for the first time that day and were defeated by Logan Elm High School. The Hillsboro girls were matched against Logan High School for the third-place prize and defeated Logan to take third for the day.

In the final round, the Hillsboro boys went against number-one seeded Miami Trace. The Panthers fought hard but just were ultimately overwhelmed by Hillsboro, who took first place for the day.

“We are very proud of both of our varsity teams this year,” coaches Jeff Miller and Shane Ison said. “We still have a lot to work on and are continuing to get better every day.

“These tournaments can be a grind. Sixteen Baker games can get tiring for the bowlers and makes for a long day. It was good for the boys to bowl in that house and in a pressure format to prepare them for what they will see at sectionals in February. They keep showing more determination every time they bowl. They will be a serious contender for another state bid.

“Our girls will be in Columbus for their sectionals. I think the ladies learned a good lesson Saturday to never let up off the gas. They laid back and got beaten out of first place after leading all day long.”
