The Hillsboro boys team was led by freshman Hayden Miller in his first-ever high school match, shooting an astonishing 461, followed by senior Tyler King with a 449. Senior Sajoun Jones was next with a 409. Senior Hunter Lowe ended the match with a 365, and freshman Chase Cummings rounded out the scoring with a 186.
In second place in the boys match were the McClain Tigers, led by Hunter Rumer, and in third place were the Chillicothe Cavaliers, led by Dalton Chaney.
"For the first match of the season, I was very happy with the boys,” Hillsboro coach Shane Ison said. “They showed great promise for this upcoming season.”
As for the Lady Indians, Hillsboro defeated visiting Chillicothe and McClain. Hillsboro scored a 1,958, led by junior Maddy Miller (who qualified for state as a freshman) with a score of 459. In second was junior Mary Herman with a 354. Sophomores Brook Kier, with a 250, and Olivia Wilson, with a 249, were next, ending with junior Marissa Carter with a 243.
"We were without a couple of key players last night,” Coach Jeff Miller said. “However, it just shows how deep we really are when you have players coming off the bench, never competing before, shooting 50 pins better from one game to the next. It gives you an idea of what your team is really all about.
"We did well last year but came up short at districts. This year, our team is more experienced, and they are hungry for more, so we expect great things.”
The Hillsboro junior varsity boys team finished second in the match with a 1,680 score, losing to the Chillicothe team at 1714. McClain finished third at 1,006. Hillsboro was led by Jacob Burton with a 351.
The Hillsboro junior varsity girls team defeated the McClain girls, 1,059 to 527. Hillsboro was led by freshman Hailey Hughes scoring a 260.
