The Hillsboro Indians earned a Frontier Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday night and did so in what was the FAC opener for the 2021 season. Hillsboro’s win came by defeating the visiting Chillicothe Cavaliers by a 5-3 score at Richard Shaffer Park.

Hillsboro’s win also moves them to 7-1 overall this season, and this latest win began when the Tribe took a 4-0 lead after two innings, as they scored three runs in the first inning, then followed with a one-run second inning.

The Indians opened the bottom of the first inning with Ryan Scott taking first base with an error committed by the Cavs’ infield.

Next was Quintin Captain taking first base on an infield error as well, giving the Indians two base runners in their first two at-bats. Hunter Green batted in Scott with a single to centerfield, as he went to second base on the throw to the infield, allowing Captain to reach third base.

After two consecutive outs were made, Captain scored the second run of the game on an infield error, allowing Zach Humphries to take first base to keep the inning going for the Indians.

Hillsboro’s lead jumped to three runs when Nick Lewis singled on a line drive that scored Green from second base, pushing the Tribe ahead by a 3-0 score.

In the bottom of the second, Scott singled with one out (then stole second base), and Captain drew a walk. Scott and Captain then had a double steal, moving Scott to third and Captain to second with one out.

Scott made it a four-run advantage for the Indians when Green grounded out to second base, scoring Scott from third.

CHS came back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but HHS responded with one final run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Hillsboro’s final run crossed home plate as Captain hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Jeremy Kemper from third base for 5-2 lead. CHS added one last run in the top of the fifth inning.

For the game, the Indians collected six hits and committed one error, while Chillicothe had seven hits, but they committed four errors.

Scott finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs, and Kemper had one run scored. Captain finished with one run and two RBI, while teammate Green went 1-for-3 with one run.

Tanner Warner, Lewis and Coltin Hunter each finished 1-for-3.

Warner was the winning pitcher, as he pitched six innings on the mound. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out six batters on 89 total pitches.

Scott gained the save for HHS, pitching the seventh inning. He allowed no runs on one hit and no walks, as he finished with three strikeouts.

Next for the Indians is a game on Friday, April 9, as they are scheduled to travel to Fayette County to take on the host Washington Blue Lions at 5 p.m.
