The No. 7 seeded Hillsboro Indians went down to the wire in their Division II SE District Semifinal game with the No. 6 Gallia Academy Blue Devils Monday at Athens High School, though it was late-inning heroics in the bottom of the eighth that led to the Indians advancing to the district finals.

Hillsboro scored the walk-off, game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth as Ethan Watson hit an RBI single to score Ryan Scott for the 1-0 victory.

The top of the eighth inning began with Scott reaching first base and moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Payton Bell, who was out at first base. Kelton Anderson reached first on an error. Then came the game-winning hit as Watson sent the ball over the head of the pitcher with the swing of the bat, scoring Scott from second base for the win.

The winning pitcher was Ethan Humphries, who pitched the top of the seventh and eighth innings in relief, entering the game with a 0-0 score, finishing with two strikeouts. The no-decision went to Luke Magulac, who pitched the first six innings, allowing no runs and striking out 10 batters.

This postseason, the Indians are 3-0, winning games against New Lexington (5-3) and Washington (14-4 in five innings) during the sectional round.

With the win, the Indians move to 14-11 overall, winning their past eight games, with their last loss coming on Saturday, April 21.

Next for Hillsboro is a game against No. 5 seeded Circleville, who defeated No. 1 seeded Zane Trace, 12-5 on Monday in the other district semifinal game. This postseason, Circleville has also defeated No. 4 seeded Fairfield Union, 9-4.
