HILLSBORO — Four goals from Hillsboro senior Lexi Sheppard and six more combined for the Lady Indians led to a third Frontier Athletic Conference win of the 2020 season, with the Lady Indians defeating Highland County counterpart McClain by a 10-0 score Tuesday at HHS.
With the victory, Hillsboro improves to the .500 mark on the season at 4-4 overall and jumps above that same mark in the FAC standings with a 3-2 record after five conference games.
“We had a good game, played well as a team and scored a lot of goals. We still have a lot of preparing to do for our next game later this week against Chillicothe, so we moved a lot of people around to see everybody at different positions and iron some things out,” HHS head coach Amanda Miller said.
The Lady Indians led by a 3-0 score at halftime when the first goal came with 32:38 still remaining in the first half, as Zugg placed the ball in the back of the net off a cross kick from Brooke Ulicny. Next was Ulicny scoring a goal for the Lady Indians, with the assist from a cross kick by Brynn Bledsoe, with 30:10 left on the first-half clock for the two-goal advantage.
Hillsboro then had the first of four goals scored by Sheppard go past the keeper, this one with six seconds left in the first half near the goal for the aforementioned 3-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Sheppard earned the hat trick with back-to-back goals to start the half, with those coming at the 39:46 mark and the 29:22 mark of the final half for a 5-0 advantage.
HHS added another goal for a six-goal advantage, with this goal coming off the foot of Hannah Brandyberry with 24:32 left in the contest. MHS was then charged with an own goal, putting the Lady Indians ahead by seven goals.
The final three goals for HHS came from Blair (assist by Sheppard) with 13:20 left, Sheppard (assist by Ulicny) with 4:55 on the clock and Zugg (assist by Sheppard) with 2:53 remaining in the match for the 10-goal win.
“This season we’ve had a couple tough losses that I wish have gone our way, but overall we are having a great season and we are playing as a team, and I see a lot of positives coming out of this season,” Miller said. “We are hoping on the next go-around in the league games, we have different outcomes the next time we play a couple teams. Hopefully we end the year with a winning record and continue to move forward.”
Coach Miller also spoke about the season of the Lady Indians, as many players have stood out.
“Defensively, Zinny Adams is doing amazing as a leader, as she’s playing sweeper. She’s a big part of our defense, and she’s talking girls through the entire game and is leading,” Miller said. “Kenzie Dietrick, our goalie, is in her first year playing goal and she’s had some phenomenal games. On Monday vs. Western Brown, she had 27 saves and has been doing fantastic.
“Midfield, Lexi Sheppard and Sammi Blair have been doing a great job holding down the middle of the field together. They are working well as a team and communicating well as a team. Strikers are Brooke Ulicny and Laila Zugg, and they are doing well working together as a team and putting goals in the back of the net.”
