GREENFIELD — The Hillsboro Lady Indians and the McClain Lady Tigers were tied at 3-3 headed into the seventh inning. Once the top of the seventh was finished, Hillsboro had gained a two-run lead off a towering home run by senior Hanna Breeden to eventually give the visitors the 5-3 victory.
Hillsboro’s two-run win came with a one-out, two-run home run by Breeden, the Division I signee, as she sent the ball on a journey over the centerfield fence, allowing her and Emily Loudin to round the bases to break what was a 3-3 tied score going into the final inning.
“It is always good to come out with the win, but obviously it doesn’t go the way we want it to every time,” HHS head coach Katie Moberly said. “We need to score more runs early on and be more consistent.
“This was a great team win.”
Breeden was also the winning pitcher, as she pitched the complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks. She faced 29 batters and finished with 10 strikeouts.
“Hanna pitched really well and was hitting her locations,” Moberly said. “After sitting off for a week (due to the recent weather) and not facing in-game competition, it was really good to see her pitch like she did.”
To start the second inning, the Lady Indians took the early 1-0 advantage with Riley Moberly scoring the first run of the game as she reached the bases on an error. Moberly gained the run off a sacrifice by Keely Bennington for the RBI.
McClain took the lead in the bottom of the third inning where Allie Beatty and Kenzie Anderson each were able to round the bases off a triple by Madison Schumacher with one out for the 2-1 lead.
The Lady Tigers added another run to their lead in the bottom of the fifth where Brooklyn Rickman scored a run off a single by Schumacher, again with one out for the 3-1 advantage. Schumacher ended the day 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Also with one hit each for MHS were Kelcey Smith and Peyton Smith.

“I told the girls we just went toe-to-toe with a really good team,” MHS head coach Ed Bolender said. “Breeden is the real deal, and there are things we shouldn’t hang our heads about.
“If we get a base hit here or there, and we left runners on the bases in the early innings, so we have to get better there. We only had two errors, so we are cleaning up our fielding, but you have to tip your hat to Breeden … she got the pitch she wanted and hit a bomb.”
Hillsboro tied the score in the top of the sixth with Madison Snyder and Ashleigh Baucom scoring runs off a two-RBI single by Moberly. Moberly led HHS at 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. Breeden finished 1-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.
The loss was charged to Abby Shrout. She pitched all seven innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks. Shrout totaled three strikeouts in the league game.
“Abby had them off-kilter a little bit,” Bolender said. “She had them guessing a little bit, and that was a good thing to see. Abby was on her game for sure.”
McClain is now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the SCOL. HHS improves to 5-3 overall.
