The Frontier Athletic Conference is looking into expanding the six-team conference to eight teams, according to a release on the OHSAA website last week.

In the release from FAC Commissioner Terri Tutt on the conference openings section of the OHSAA website (dated Jan. 11, 2018), it states the following:

“The Frontier Athletic Conference is seeking two schools for its league. We primarily are a Division II conference located in the Southeast District of the OHSAA. Please contact Commissioner Terri Tutt with questions or information at FACterritutt@gmail.com.”

Commissioner Tutt spoke to The Highland County Press about the conference showing interest in adding more schools to the conference in the future.

“The Frontier Athletic Conference's Board of Control has a goal of an eight-team league,” Tutt said. “We consist of six schools that are mostly OHSAA Division II. As Commissioner, I have sent invitations to several schools that are close in proximity and similar in student population size. We would like to have eight teams by the 2019-2020 school year.

“The main reason for an eight-team league is scheduling. For example, it can be difficult for athletic directors to fill non-league football games with six teams. Currently, the FAC competes weeks 6-10 in football. That requires an athletic director to fill weeks 1-5 with non-league games.”

Other conference openings listed are the Chagrin Valley Conference (December 2017) and Mid-State League Ohio Division (August 2017).

Currently, the FAC members are Hillsboro and McClain from Highland County, Miami Trace and Washington from Fayette County, Chillicothe from Ross County and Jackson from Jackson County. Five of those schools are from the former South Central Ohio League, which was disbanded at the end of the 2016-17 school year.

“The FAC is a league that stretches over four counties, and we are open to any school but will need to look at driving distances in regard to travel times to competitions,” Tutt said.

“The creation and acceptance of teams into the FAC began in October 2016 where the aforementioned schools all joined the new conference. In a time of many changes in Ohio leagues and schools, the Frontier Athletic Conference is looking to establish a stable league with great schools and even better athletic contests.”

The FAC is in its first year of competition, which began with the fall sports season in 2017. The FAC is currently in winter sports competition with basketball, wrestling, swimming and bowling all taking place.
