The fourth week of the high school football season in the Frontier Athletic Conference not only got the conference one week closer to games between FAC teams, but it also showed teams can be competitive outside the conference as well.
The FAC teams went 3-3 in their six games in Week 4, with the Hillsboro Indians, Jackson Ironmen and Washington Blue Lions all earning victories last Friday as the Ironmen moved to 4-0, being the lone undefeated team from the FAC. Jackson stayed undefeated by defeating the Western Brown Broncos — at WBHS — 56-21.
The Indians and Blue Lions both moved to 3-1 with Washington defeating Ponitz (33-0) and the Indians winning at Williamsburg (14-9). The three losses from FAC teams were McClain falling to East Clinton (26-7), Chillicothe to Centennial (48-15) and Miami Trace to Marlington (52-19).

• In looking closer at the McClain Tigers in their loss to East Clinton, the Tigers totaled 152 offensive yards (East Clinton had 362 yards of offense) and had possession of the ball for 22:30.
McClain was led in rushing by Dalton Mischal with 13 carries for 63 yards with one touchdown, averaging 4.8 yards per carry.
Injuries are starting to add up for the Tigers with one of their best athletes, Garrison Banks, being injured, as that will hamper MHS on both sides of the ball.
• Looking at the numbers by the Cavaliers in their loss, they totaled 50 plays against Centennial with 299 yards on offense in 31:13 total minutes of offense.
What stands out for CHS is they had three turnovers and were 4-of-10 on third down. Quarterback Christian Benson was 13-of-19 for 181 yards with no touchdowns, plus he had 11 carries for 53 yards and one touchdown rushing. Their leading rusher was Hunter Thomas with 16 carries for 59 yards and one touchdown.
Also for the Cavs, Logan Snowden had four receptions for 68 yards to lead the team.
Chillicothe is going through some tough times in the win-loss column, but they are a young team, and that is expected. As their season continues, it will be interesting to see how this team grows from here on out.
• The Panthers had a tough road trip in their loss to Marlington, with the Panthers having 356 yards on offense, as they had the ball for nearly 26 minutes. MTHS was 2-of-8 on third down and had four turnovers.
Dalton Mayer had a balanced game at quarterback for the Panthers with a 9-of-16 performance for 93 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also rushed for 40 yards and eight carries. The Panthers were led in rushing this past Friday by Caden Sweitzer with four carries for 75 yards and one touchdown. Teammate Austin Carpenter finished with six carries for 67 yards (two touchdowns), and Jayden LeBeau had 10 carries for 54 yards rushing.
Joshua Gallimore led MTHS with four receptions for 55 yards, averaging 13.8 yards per game.
The Panthers have a strong rushing game. Once FAC play comes, it will be very exciting to see how that rushing game will be a positive for them against the rivals of their conference as it seems very balanced, or at least it was in Week 4.
• The Washington Blue Lions got back on track after their first loss on the season with a convincing win, including a game where they had 64 plays, as their offense totaled 362 yards, while the defense allowed just 194. They were 50 percent in third-down conversions at 8-of-16 and had just 40 penalty yards.
Their numbers were balanced throughout the roster, with Ethan Rogers-Wright at 11-of-18 for 75 yards with one touchdown, and teammate and backup quarterback Jerome Mack was 8-of-13 for 86 yards and one touchdown.
Jameson McCane totaled 12 carries for 73 yards for the Blue Lions to lead the way with on one score, and Mack had 12 rushes for 68 yards and one touchdown run. Eli Lynch was the receiving leader with 12 receptions for 79 yards, and Calum Brown totaled three receptions for 49 yards and one touchdown.
This Blue Lions team is a strong team, and they have a chance to challenge for the FAC championship if they keep this level of play going as they are 3-1 on the season. When they play Hillsboro and Jackson in FAC play, those will be must-watch games because of just how competitive they can be.
• The Hillsboro Indians football team played a great second half against Williamsburg last Friday, and the play from senior running back Mark Gallimore was one of the gutsiest performances that any of us will see this season. Gallimore missed the first half with an injury, but the Indians needed their starting running back, and he more than answered the call with a touchdown run on the first drive of the third quarter.
In the fourth, the senior had a huge fourth down conversion that took the Indians to the goal line, which allowed Justin Spears to reach the end zone to give the Indians the lead for good.
Those were the lone two touchdowns scored by the Indians as they won 14-9, and the defense of HHS played big too by keeping previously undefeated Williamsburg to nine points in the win.
Unofficially, Gallimore totaled 60 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Spears unofficially totaled 97 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.
The Indians have been a fun team to watch this season, and their defense has been a huge part of their 3-1 record. The Indians played without some starters last Friday and still battled for the win, so from here on out with a full lineup, it will be even more exciting to see what this team can achieve if they play up to their potential.
• So far this season, Jackson is the lone undefeated team from the FAC, and the Ironmen’s win last Friday night was the most dominant of the season through the first four weeks. Jackson defeated Western Brown, 56-21, where they totaled 440 yards rushing as a team and 188 yards passing for a total of 628 yards.
JHS ran a total of 70 plays on offense, and they were led in rushing by Jayden Spires with 19 carries for 145 yards and four touchdowns. Also with 100-plus yards rushing was Mitchell Jordan at nine carries for 126 yards and one touchdown. Jared Icenhower was 7-of-10 passing for 188 yards with one touchdown passing. The receiving leader was Treylan Davis with two receptions for 130 yards and one touchdown.
This Jackson team is playing very well so far in 2019, and they are the team to beat in the FAC up to their point of the season. Remember, they were co-champions with Hillsboro last season. If both of those teams are playing at high levels when it comes for their turn to face each other, that could be a whale of a game on Friday, Oct. 25.
