Scoring was at a premium for the Hillsboro Lady Indians on Wednesday night, but they didn’t back down against the Chillicothe Lady Cavaliers, falling in South Central Ohio League play by a 50-20 score at HHS.
The two teams combined for just 11 points in the opening quarter, with Hillsboro’s Taylor Chaney bringing the Lady Indians to within three points of the visitors following points at the buzzer.
The second quarter went more in favor of the Lady Cavaliers, outscoring the hosts, 16-6. In the second frame, points for HHS were scored at the beginning of the quarter by Kelsey Burns, and later by Natalie Sullivan with Sullivan sinking a layup at the 5:58 mark to make it a 10-8 deficit for HHS.

CHS (5-1, 10-2) answered with a 12-0 run for a 23-8 lead with 1:23 left in the second. Sullivan broke up the scoring as she sank a jumper with 20.5 seconds remaining in the second frame, leaving the score at halftime, 23-10 in favor of CHS.
That field goal by Sullivan near the end of the second frame was the lone field goal of HHS from the aforementioned 20.5 second mark until there was 2:18 left in the fourth quarter when Lana Grover scored two points in the paint.
In between the two field goals, HHS was held to a single point in the third frame, trailing 37-11 after three quarters. That point was scored by Sydney Bobbitt with a free throw at the 2:39 mark of the third. In the fourth, HHS scored nine total points, with their first points of the second coming with 2:51 left in regulation off two free throws by Burns. Burns also sank a 3-pointer with 1:03 left on the clock for the Lady Indians, and the final HHS points of the game came with Josie Hopkins scoring on a layup.
“I haven’t figured out what the magic practice plan or play is, but they play hard and do what they can,” HHS head coach JR Moberly said. “They do it as well and as hard as they know how to do it, but it just isn’t working out for them. Chillicothe is a good, long, athletic and physical team. We knew going in it would be a physical game, and that doesn’t play to our style, that’s for sure.”
Burns led the Lady Indians with seven points, scoring five in the fourth frame. Also for HHS, Sullivan finished with four points and Bobbitt totaled three. Scoring two points each were Hopkins, Grover and Chaney.
HHS (1-5, 1-9) finished 3-of-6 from the free throw line and made seven field goals, shooting around 30 percent for the game from the field.
Chillicothe was led by Osh Brown with 12 points, collecting all of her points in the first three quarters. She made six two-point baskets in the win. Next was Hayden Price with 10 points, including two 3-pointers. The Lady Cavs finished 6-of-15 from the free-throw line.
HHS will host the McClain Lady Tigers in SCOL play on Saturday night.
