Bruce Miles has been named the next head coach of the Hillsboro boys basketball program.

Miles, a 2000 graduate of HHS, was approved by the Hillsboro School Board of Education on Wednesday night during their monthly meeting. Miles was previously an assistant coach for five seasons, and in his first two years coaching at HHS, he was the freshman coach.

Miles, who will also teach in the Hillsboro School system, replaces former head coach Brett Prince, who was the head coach for HHS the past three seasons. Miles has also coached under Tim Davis, who was the coach before Prince.

"I'm very excited to be the head coach of the boys basketball program," Miles said. "I love this community and look forward to giving back to the school and to the community that has given so much to me and my family.

"I want to thank Mr. (Dave) Dietrick and Mr. (Jason) Snively for this opportunity. My family has been big in this process, so I must thank them for their support."

When asked is this something he ever thought of … becoming the head coach of his alma mater, Miles said "it has always been in the back of his mind."

"I knew when I started coaching I wanted to be a head coach, and it has always been in the back of my mind to coach at Hillsboro, but I knew it would take time," he said. "I had to gain the experience to handle the responsibility."

For the 31st head coach in the history of the Hillsboro program (32nd coaching change), he also thanked Prince and Davis for their guidance the past six seasons, knowing being the head coach will be different.

"I have to thank Tim Davis and Brett Prince for being mentors to me in my coaching career," Miles said. "Being in charge of my own program is a change. When I coached freshmen or JV, I only had one team to worry about. Now I will focus on grades 7-12 and would like to help with the youth program.

"It's going to be a change, but I look forward to the challenge. I'm eager to get started with selecting a coaching staff and working with the players."

The expectations Miles has for the program are lofty, but attainable, as he wants his team to work.

"We are going to play up-tempo and push in transition," he said. "We'll play as a team and play unselfish basketball. I want us to limit turnovers and be a strong rebounding team. Being a strong rebounding team will be key. As always, I want us to continue to have high expectations on the defensive side of the ball.

"The expectation is to play 110-percent every time we take the court … to defend our home court and to compete for a league championship."

Not only does Miles want the team to improve on the court, but he wants them to show growth off the court as well.

"I want this program to continue to grow," he said. "I want our athletes to grow not only on the court, but in the classroom and community as well."
