Hillsboro boys basketball varsity head coach Brett Prince resigned Wednesday, as confirmed by Hillsboro Athletic Director Dave Dietrick and Coach Prince.
Buckeye Country 105.5 FM was first to report the resignation.
"I just made this decision on Tuesday and it was gut-wrenching," Prince told The Highland County Press. "It was a hard and tough decision to make because I love coaching those kids. Making this decision was what I think is best for the program.
"It had nothing to to with anything else, and I hate to do this in the first week of June, but it still gives them time to bring someone in."
Dietrick spoke about Prince.
"This just happened this afternoon," Dietrick said. "I hate to see it happen, because I like him as an individual. Brett is well thought of as a coach, not only at Hillsboro, but around the league as well.
"I appreciate the time I had with him, and I wish it could have lasted longer as head coach."
Prince took over the helm of the Indians boys basketball program for the 2011-12 season, a season where the Indians won the South Central Ohio League championship for the second consecutive season.
"As I understand it, as of right now, Brett will continue to teach at Hillsboro," Dietrick said. "This was totally his decision and we'll miss him as the head coach."
Just last week, Prince was renewed as the head coach of the Indians by the school board.
"I felt maybe it was time for a change, and to get a new face to the program," Prince said. "It isn't about me being unhappy, but what is best for the program.
"I never did this with the intentions of leaving Hillsboro. I absolutely plan on staying at Hillsboro as long as they will have me."

"I'm sure Brett and I will talk more at another time, but I can't stress enough how much I appreciated what he did for the Hillsboro basketball program," Dietrick said.
Before arriving at HHS, Prince was a varsity assistant and JV coach at Newark Catholic and Westland High Schools, where he coached in a Division I regional final game with Westland and in a state championship game while with Newark Catholic.
Prince earned his education degree from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and graduated from Buckeye Local High School in 1991.
"I'm not saying I won't coach at some level or do something with basketball, but I'll try to help out somehow," Prince said. "I'm not locked into anything yet.
"The administration has been great to work with. It has been a fun and enjoyable experience, and the kids have been great. Hillsboro has a lot of great kids."
Hillsboro will still host a summer shootout this weekend but will not be participating in the event.
