HILLSBORO — The McClain Tigers traveled to Hillsboro on Tuesday night, and for one half, both teams played close to even. The second half went more to the direction of the Tigers, and with that came a 5-2 win over the Indians.
The South Central Ohio League win by the Tigers saw Tyler Jackson gain a hat-trick with three goals in the league match.
Also with goals for the Tigers were Mat Barton and Hunter Hice. The lone assist in the match for MHS went to Jackson.
“It was a close game,” MHS head coach Jon Chamblin said. “These teams are evenly matched. We are both down this year. We are both struggling right now, and I knew coming in there it was going to be a good game.
“We played even in the first half, but we played a lot on our side of the field. We had seven shots on goal, but we just couldn’t get anything to fall. We came out in the second half, and our plan was to keep shooting shots on goal because something was bound to fall.”

The Tigers totaled 10 shots on goal in their victory. Of the three goals scored in the second half for the Tigers, the tie was broken at the 22:16 mark by Barton to give MHS a 3-2 lead.
As for the host Indians, they had goals from Lane Mason and Austin Goolsby. Assists for the Indians were credited to Jacob Stauss.
For the match, HHS totaled five shots on goal. Joe Rudy at keeper for the Indians totaled eight saves, including seven in the first half. For MHS, Camden Yates had two saves.
“The kids played well, and the defense played lights out,” Chamblin said. “Our offense passed the ball well, and that’s the reason we were able to score. We had good teamwork.”
The second half of the intense match also saw the Tigers have solid defense efforts from Kaleb Shepherd, as he kept the Indians’ offense from getting what at the time could have been a game-tying shot off. Another defensive play that helped keep the one-goal advantage with 10:04 left in the match came from Zach Anderson.
Yates made a big save at the 7:45 mark of the second half, again helping MHS keep a one-goal lead.
The win moves MHS to 3-4 overall, while the Indians have two wins on the season.
