The Hillsboro Lady Indians fended off the visiting Washington Lady Blue Lions in their home opener on Tuesday night, with the Lady Indians also gaining their first win of the season with an 8-0 shutout victory.

Hillsboro’s win came in their first Frontier Athletic Conference match of the season, and after scoring their first goal within the first five minutes of the match, the Lady Indians rolled past the visiting Blue Lions for the eight-goal win.

“We played with a lot of energy. In my opinion, everything can always be better,” Hillsboro head coach Anthony Carson – who gained his first win as the HHS head coach – said. “Passes were lacking. We’re just trying to power through everything instead of finessing our way through. Other than that, they did well.

“It’s still too early, but we’re trying to figure out all our pieces. I know who our attacking pieces are, but midfield and defensively is where I need to figure out the fine-tuning part.”

Senior Callan Myers was a force on Tuesday night, gaining the hat-trick with two of her three goals coming in the first half, followed by the first goal of the second half. Also, late in the conference match, Myers played keeper, where she made a save with around 5:00 left in the contest.

Myers scored the first goal of the game with 35:29 still on the scoreboard, and with 11:24 left in the first half, teammate Paige Howland made it a two-goal lead with a goal. Myers scored her second goal of the match with 9:31 left in the first half, as that completed the scoring in the opening 40 minutes with Hillsboro leading, 3-0.

The second-half scoring mirrored the first half at the beginning with Myers completing the hat-trick off a free kick with 33:53 left in the match. After the Lady Indians took a four-goal advantage, they still had more goals in their arsenal as Sami Blair added a HHS goal with 32:35 left in regulation.

After the Lady Blue Lions switched keepers, the result was the same for the Lady Indians with Blair gaining her second goal of the match with 31:25 on the clock, resulting in a 6-0 score. Shay Neal scored a goal as well for Hillsboro with her goal coming at the 29:34 mark of the second half, and the final goal of the match for Hillsboro was from Lexi Sheppard with the match still having 24:30 remaining.

Also standing out for the Lady Indians was defensive midfielder Brynn Bledsoe.

“We’re trying her out in a new position, and she maintained her job,” Carson said. “She did what she was supposed to do the entire night.”

For Washington, they had a few chances to score goals, as they had one called off in the first half due to being called offsides. At keeper for the Lady Indians, Alli Gaines finished with two saves.

Next for the Lady Indians is a road FAC match Thursday, Aug. 30 at Jackson, and then Saturday, Sept. 1, the Indians will be on the road at Western Brown before the annual break takes place for the Highland County Fair.

“We want to keep up the momentum from tonight. The first two games were kind of rough. We couldn’t put together two full halves back-to-back,” Carson said. “Even though we were making some changes, I thought everyone played well as a whole for the whole game tonight.”
