Having 11 players back from last season, the Hillsboro Lady Indians soccer team is poised to improve from where they were a season ago and work hard to climb up the standings in the Frontier Athletic Conference.

Last season, the Lady Indians were 6-10-2 overall with a FAC record of 5-4-1, putting them in fourth place in the conference.

“Our expectation this season is to have a better record in the FAC than last year,” HHS head coach Anthony Carson said. “I would also like to see more success in our non-league matches against Eastern, Unioto, Western Brown, Wilmington, Lynchburg-Clay and Clinton-Massie.”

Last season, the Lady Indians had their season ended in the sectional finals against Unioto. HHS went 1-1 last postseason.

This season, the Lady Indians have six seniors, four juniors, 10 sophomores and two freshmen in the program, including seniors Alli Gaines, Christine Page, Emma Ritze, Maggie Lerch, Paige Howland and Lucy Hart.

Juniors for the HHS girls program are Alexia Sheppard, Sami Blair, Sydney Lanning and Zinny Adams. The group of 10 sophomores are: Brynn Bledsoe, Katie Baucom, Laila Zugg, Kenzie Dietrick, Gracey Dearmon, Bre Karnes, Jessica Howland, Maddie Horick, Hannah Brandyberry and Clara Page.

The two freshmen on the roster are Taylor Leathley and Brooke Ulicny.

Of the 22 players listed, the aforementioned 11 returning players include: Gaines, Christine Page, Lerch, Paige Howland, Sheppard, Blair, Lanning, Adams, Bledsoe, Baucom and Zugg.

“We have an extreme amount of depth this year, where we have multiple interchangeable parts that will lead to our success,” Carson said. “We are currently possessing the ball really well in training and had a fairly successful summer in the super scrimmages we went to.”

It all comes down to playing as a team for Hillsboro this season.

“Ultimately, I measure our success in the girls’ ability to function as a team and be willing to battle for each other,” Carson said. “The culture change that coach Amanda Miller and I instilled last year has already taken root and will benefit the program in the future.”

Hillsboro is scheduled to open the ’19 season on Saturday, Aug. 17 at home, as they will host the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference at 10 a.m.
