2019 Hillsboro Boys Soccer Preview

The Hillsboro Indians boys soccer team has a new leader on the sideline, as Adam Schelling has moved up to the head coaching spot for the 2019 season.
Last year, Schelling was the junior varsity coach and varsity assistant coach, but following the retirement of longtime head coach John Weber, the Indians have a new chief, so to speak, at the helm of their program. They are rebuilding after losing a large senior class from a season ago.
“We lost a lot of talent, graduating 11 seniors last year,” Schelling said. “That is a lot of positions to fill, but we are fortunate to have guys who stepped up at the beginning of this year (in the offseason) and will be able to fill them.”
Seniors on the varsity team this year are Jason Lovely, Ethan Snapp, Brock Haines, Hunter Hice and Titus Heiser.

There are two juniors on varsity, and they are Logan Weber and Shane Sullivan. The sophomore class consists of Landon Weber, Dylan Schurman, Dylan Rigsby and Ben Florea. There are also two freshmen at varsity this season, and they are Nick Turner and Payton Robinson.
“I have high expectations for this group of students,” Schelling said. “I have a great group of guys who are unselfish and put in hard work on a daily basis. We have two freshmen we will be leaning on heavily this year to be utility players for us.”
Of those varsity players, returning from a season ago are Lovely, Snapp, Haines, Hunter, Heiser and Landon Weber.
“Even though we lost so much talent last year, I still think we should be around the top of the league this year,” Schelling said.
Last season, the Indians finished in fourth place in the Frontier Athletic Conference at 3-6-1 and had an overall record of 5-10-2. Their season ended in the sectional finals, where the Indians lost to visiting Circleville, 2-1.
In 2018, the Indians defeated (scores in parentheses) the Eastern Brown Warriors (4-2), Washington Blue Lions (8-1 and 6-1), McClain (4-3) and the Fayetteville Rockets (4-0).
Members of the ’19 junior varsity team are junior Jonny Hatfield; sophomores Charlie Schneider, Darrin Schellinger, George Kuntz and Xander Hardin; and freshmen Ryan Todd, Evan Fender, LaWayne Curtis, Jake Ward and Will Hart.
HHS will have non-conference games in ’19 against Eastern, Unioto, Western Brown, Wilmington, Lynchburg-Clay and Fayetteville.
Hillsboro is scheduled to begin the regular season at home on Saturday, Aug. 17 as they are scheduled to host the Eastern Brown Warriors of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference at 11:45 a.m.
